Well, what do you eat?

My eating habits have not changed at all. That is why this is so confusing. I've been eating the same way all my life!!!

but what do you eat exactly? and how much do you eat?

details details! :)

maybe you should go to the doctor - have your thyroid checked

Yesterday I ate 2 cups of life cereal with 1 cup milk and 1/2 an apple for breakfast

lunch I ate a turkey sandwich with lettuce and tomato on a wheat kaiser roll and a fiber one bar

dinner- I ate grilled boneless skinless chicken breast , 2 cups steamed broccoli and 1 cup of macaroni salad that is all I had yesterday. Today I am having 1 cup oatmeal and 1/2 banana for breakfast.

Whwn something similar happened to me it was my thyroid.  I was in my thirties.  It can happen any time.  Get it checked.

Do you keep track of how many calories you are eating a day? If not start doing that. You may be eating the wrong foods, too much or not enough. Balanced diet is the key. Don't go hungry. Eat healthy snacks and make sure to exercise 4-6 days a week. Cardio and strength training. Strength training 3-4 days a week, Cardio 4-6 days for at least 30 minutes. I believe 40 is the sweet spot but there are different opinions on this. Also add more Cardio a few days for weight loss. On the weekends I do an hour and a half. Strength training is important too. Muscle burns more calories than fat and it also keeps your metabolism reved up. Don't do strength training everyday. When you lift you tear and rip your muscles and need a day off in between. That is extremely important. Just as important as lifting. You can break it up and do upper body one day and lower the next. I prefer to do all of my lifting in one day and take the next day completely off. Total rest. I do cardio 6 days a week and take one day a week completely off from everything. Sleep is also very important. If you don't get the proper amount of rest it can contribute to weight gain for several reasons. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2006/05 /sleep_weight_gain.html

Importance of strength training.

Weight gain can happen naturally as we age but you can work to keep it off. If you have a bunch of unexpected weight gain without changing anything go to the Dr for a physical. Thyroid problems which are common in women as they age can cause unexplained weight gain. Other symptoms as well. There are several types of thyroid problems two of the most common are Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism. Over active and under active. Read more here.

Balanced diet information. Some people make the mistake of cutting out certain foods and that is not good. You need a little of everything including fat (good fat). Diets do not work. Maybe initially to loose weight but I believe it is better to stick to a healthy eating plan that you can stick to for the rest of your life and make sure to allow cheat days or cheat meals. If you restrict completely and never allow yourself to have your favorite treat now and then, once a week or so you will be more likely to binge or over eat and I believe one day or one or two meals that are higher in calories actually helps you loose.

You should be eating about 1300 cal daily at a sedentary activity level to loose half a pound a week.

My advice, if you've not changed, is run, not walk to your doctor and have him check out it ASAP.  It could be anything from kidneys to thyroid.

Im with the couple of people who suggested you see a doctor. If your gaining weight and nothing about your routine has changed then something is wrong beyond just your diet and exercise routine.   People can plautea while trying lose weight, but once you get on a maintance routine, its rare to gain weight if your doing everything your suppose to.

You are 5'6" and 142 lbs? That is a healthy weight. 130 may be too low for your body, causing it to send you signals to eat more. 142 is DEFINITELY not overweight for 5'6", and when you say "I need to lose some serious weight" it is a little alarming.

I personally think that you should make an appoinment to see your doctor. I'm a nurse and I know that there are a ton of things that could make you gain weight, and most of them need treatment from a physician.

Also, you say you ate 2 cups of this and that, are you writting down everything? Sometimes the little things we nibble on here and there don't get logged. Just a thought.

Thank you everybody for your responses. I went to the Dr. They took blood and are running some tests. Just waiting to hear bk from them.. I also had an ultrasound done which revealed nothing..

As for calorie counting and logging my food, yes I do.

I thank gennysaures for her concern however, the reason I said serious weight is because I have been 126 - 130 lbs my entire adult life. This is a huge weight gain for me.  And with my back problems the extra weight is very noticeable.

Thanks again!!!

You're welcome. Let us know how the tests come out. Good luck.

yes, go to the doctor immediately and let us know if everything's ok.

i don't think it is that you're not eating enough, if so, your weight should remain, not gain.  it just doesn't make sense that way.
