2 weeks ago I changed my diet from burritos and fast food to fruits, whole grains, veggies, and lean protein.  I have the worse gas EVER, and I'm constipated.  I am eating around 35-45 grams of fiber a day and most everything is whole food.  Only my bread and cereal have several ingredients, otherwise everything is just what it is.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Gas X or Bean-o.

fibre isn't everything.  are you eating enough fat?

I am eating about 25-35 grams of fat a day.  I eat a 1/2 avocado, sunflower seeds, 1 tbsp peanut butter, and some meat.  I feel better and I am losing weight, but I don't like being so offensive.  I guess I'll have to try the Beano or gas pills.  I just hate taking anything.  I used to abuse laxatives so I really want the constipation to work it's self out.

Fiber carries water out of the body and that can lead to dehydration and gas.  You need to make sure that your fluid intake is high -

The average liquid a woman needs is 9 8oz. glasses of water/milk/juice + another 18oz. from foods.  This is an average, everyone is different and every body works differently.

the other thing you may want to consider is the possibility of maybe food allergies.  My former roommate was very gassy because of eggs.  There is a possibility that something you've been eating is causing it.  I'd journal the gas problem with everything else and look for some correlations. 

You made a drastic change and that usually comes with a price. Gas and bloating is a normal side effect of switching over from junk food to the healthier food that you're eating. Give it some time...

In the meantime, drink lots of fluid, like water and tea. Peppermint tea is supposed to help settle digestion issues. Try taking Gas-X and consider a stool softener instead of a laxative.

 I would have to agree... your body is probably just adjusting to the new diet which takes time. I found when I incorporated nothing but water in my diet the first week, that I was going to the potty alot (no. 2) which was not typical for me, but eventually my body got used to all the water being there and I was fine.

Definately take a stool softener and some gas relief. If you still aren't able to go to the bathroom after a few days though, I would contact a doctor. Good luck and keep up the good work!

Try Kale for the constipation.  I ate it for the first time in my life a week ago.  Had it raw as a salad (used the Lacinato variety which is supposed to be better for eating raw as it's more tender) with dried currants.  Man!  That did wonders for my digestive tract.  Thought it was a fluke and had the salad again a couple days ago.  It was definitely the salad.  The gas may be due to the constipation.  Fix one, fix the other.

Thank you all so much for your advice.  I think I may not be drinking enough water.  I'm a hairstylist, and sometimes I get busy and forget.  You guys are all awesome for taking the time to help me!

LOL- I fart all the time and just thought it was normal.

 

If you do not drink enough liquids, it does not matter how much fibre you eat.  The fiber will end up constipating you.

 

 

Just give it time. Your body is obviously reacting to a radical change in what's coming in.
