Sesame Oil vs Olive Oil

Quote  |  Reply
Does anyone have any opinion on these two oils?  They both have about the same fat content.  The Olive Oil has double the monounsaturated fat.

Is sesame oil good for a sauteing?  Thanks

sesame oil tastes amazing. Saute, stir fry, you cant go wrong at all. I love it, and sometimes add in a bit of teriyaki sauce with it :)
Sesame oil is great for making chinese food (like stir fries and sweet'n'sour chicken, etc) but basically, choose for taste. Oil should always be used sparingly though, IMO. Olive oil is about = to sesame oil healthwise, I think.
Oh, and olive oil is a lot cheaper than sesame so if you can't taste the difference I'd suggest using olive oil. ;-)

Where I come from Sesame oil is 1/3rd th ecost of olive oil!

a gr8 dilema for me is weather to pay all that extra money and buy imported olive oil that may not be fresh or locally available sesame oil!

I was always under the impression that sesame oil was a condiment since it has such a strong flavor - something you add at the end of cooking an asian dish to give it that touch of authenticity.  I am also pretty sure that sesame seed oil has a pretty low smoking point - so it will smoke up your house if you heat it too much (same as EVOO).

I agree with jez, sesame oil is more of a condiment....it loses its flavour when you cook with it, so there is really no point using it. I like to cook without oil (maybe just some olive oil cooking spray), and then for dishes where I want the sesame flvour, add a teeny amount of sesame oil at the end of the cooking process. It also retains it's flavour nicely in soups, I like to add a little to chicken stock along with some chili garlic paste and soy sauce for a great wonton soup base....these flavour are also awesome for a stir-fry...yum.

I would say first of all, cook with oil spray, but then add oil at the END. Then you can really taste it. Sesame oil is SO good and strong and fragrant. I love it. You don't necessarily have to use it ONLY for Asian food. I don't really see where that comes from. Olive oil kind of tastes like nothing to me... Unfortunately sesame oil is more expensive.
