400 pound seven year old

Quote  |  Reply
I think this girl beat that one 8 year old (?) kid who was considered abused for eating too much food.  Poor kid, i wonder why the parents let them even reach PAST 200 pounds at 5 years old.

Jesus Christ, that is so upsetting. Shouldn't something have been done when all those 'concerned locals' noticed her weight was still rising?
This is really sad. I dont even know what to say. Surely there is something wrong with her more than simply overeating.
Oh my gosh, that poor kid....
Wow. That literally makes me cry. How can any parent allow that to happen, isn't that child neglect?

Maybe she has a disease which makes her feel hungry all of the time, I can't remember what that is called though..
Oh and the comments people were making about her are horrible. Those people need a serious dose of reality.
disease or no disease the parents should have had this child treated when it started to get out of control a few years ago.  It is child abuse and ignorance or whatever is not an excuse.  so sad that parents can allow things like this and its not considered neglect or abuse.... unbelievable.  If you starved a child they'd sure be taken into custody in a heartbeat though.  So sad....
I really do believe this should be considered abuse or child neglect. I mean... one thing is allowing a child to be overweight, or even borderline obese, but there is no way any parent would not realize something needed to be done when a child was reaching a weight considered morbidly obese by adult standards.
The only reason I brought up that disease is because there is no way that a 5-7 y/o child would naturally want to eat that much. One thing about young children is that they haven't yet started eating out of emotional reasons, they eat purely because they need to..but once they are full they discontinue eating.

I could be wrong, I know the bad habits are learned during the baby/toddler years, but I don't think they come into affect until 8-10 y/o..I don't know any 5 y/o who eats just to eat, do you?
I agree, it is a form of child abuse.  If so many adults turn to food for comfort, it only makes sense that children will do so as well.

None of us know what she is going through, to her, having to bum-shuffle to get around is a normal part of her life, it makes it even more saddening to know that she can't run around and play with all the other kids.
I think the parents should be brought to court. It's unconceivable to me that parents would let their child become like that. There might be something wrong medically speaking with the kid but still. She's going to die, if not soon, soon enough. Think of all the damage this must have done to her organs. It's just terrible
the doctors should have intervened a long time ago.  something is terribly wrong here, and this child may very well die because of it.

the patterns can start in infancy -- every time the child cries, the care give pops a bottle in the mouth.  food is used to comfort bruises.  food is offered when it is not even asked for.  i know a family, too close to home, that the mom continually offers soda and treats to her children throughout the day -- it's not a matter of they ask and then throw tantrums if they don't get it -- they don't even have to ask.  that commercial that is currently running is all too true.  yes, I was somewhat guilty as a parent, too.  we think because the child is not gaining weight, that it's okay.  WRONG!
my sister started eating just to eat when she was about 3 or 4. she never reached such i gigantic weight, but i think it's possible. the other thing is that is wasn't learned from my mother, so it may be possible for emotional eating to just be ingraned in someone with no reason why.
Does anyone have any more links to see how her hospital stay/enforced diet it going? I'm really interested in seeing if they were able to help her.

And I completely agree that starving your child to death and feeding your child to death are equally abusive.
The poor sweet thing.  Do parents really not know what this is doing to their child's health?  I cannot even comprehend this sort of thing.
oh god I saw that thing about the boy. They said the mother feels "obligated" to feed him whenever he asks. I can't even imagine having a mother like that. Those kids are gonna be scarred for life!

Oh and the disorder brokentink mentioned is compulsive over-eating, or binge disorder. But there's tons of things that can make you eat like that. Stress, or a part of your brain (I think it was the hypothalamus? I forget) that tells your body you're full can be messed up. I'd hate that. I'm so thankful that I don't have any serious problems like that.
prader willi syndrome is what causes insatiable appetite and morbid obesity. and according to this, she now only weighs 140lbs.
This is the only update i could find. Not very detailed, but has some good news and (hard to see) photos.

Yep, prader willi does cause uncontrollable eating.  Parents of children like this have to lock food up in their homes.  I was also interested to see how she was progressing...
The comments under the video made me cry. Makes me be ashamed to be the same species as those cruel people.
