I have severe Irritable Bowel Syndrome, what should I eat?
Please, any suggestions?
I'm also lactose intolerant/have a wheat allergy
Its gotten so bad that i haven't "gone" in about 5 days [sorry to be gross]
help?!
everyone with IBS is different - it is up to you to find out what irritates your bowel and what doesn't (ex: for some people fiber is very positive but for me fiber worsens your symptoms). You also have to figure out if there is anything else going on in your life that might have changed in the past few days to make your system/ yourself more stressed or irritated (contrary to popular belief, stress on a system does not have to be something bad, it could also be something exciting or different).
However, because it has been 5 days - I suggest getting a hold of your gastroenterologist - perhaps there is a blockage.
I'm right there with you...
. For about 2-3 weeks now I have been miserable. I could tell you to avoid your trigger foods although I have had this flare up and I have not had any of my trigger foods. If I have been able to "go" it has been minuscule and I am so bloated I have had to take a laxative and it is not even helping. I would call your doctor...that is what I'm going to do.
For the time being I would just eat small meals that generally don't bother you. Have you been eating any new foods recently?
My IBS got a whole lot better when my stress from commuting was removed. Stress is such a huge factor in my episodes. I have had great success with this healthy eating too. Taking in more fresh raw veggies & fruit makes me feel better and poop eaiser too.
When I am really "stove up" tho' I take a medication that you can no longer get in the good ol' USA: Zelnorm. Fabulous stuff. you take it first thing on an empty stomach...it works gently. Maybe it's available through pharmacies in Canada? I'm still using up my doctor's samples he gave me before the ban. He says it's good medicine and the ban is the result of "lawyers".
I have had to be really careful about fiber supplements. Instead of 1-2 Tablespoons of Benefib in the morning, I started with 1/4 teaspoon. Gradually increasing--and only if there was no gassy bloating and discomfort, until I am up to a little bit more than 1 teaspoon after a year. But it does help.
Water, drink lots of water and then drink some more. float. swim. drown. water really does help.
I can sympathize/empathizew with your misery. Been there too often. Do contact your doctor. I hope you feel better soon.
I started taking pro biotics (from the heath food store) ..... 2 weeks later I 'go' everyday with little tono discomfort.
i'm on a medication for mine, amitiza. it works pretty decent, but it's really expensive.
i found miralax works miracles too. you can get that pretty much everywhere.
Oh man this topic is near and not so dear to my heart. I've had IBS for 9 years..started around 17 yrs. old until now. I've gone 2 weeks before without 'going' so I know the horror of it all. When the IBS was really bad when I was younger I was constantly depressed..the only time I went out was on the weekends and to do that I would take a laxative Friday and Saturday night and not eat all weekend so my stomach would stay flat. Gosh it was a nightmare! I shudder thinking of those days.
I have it fairly under control now and I've got lots of tips and stuff that might help. The thing that made the biggest difference for me is completely cutting out dairy. Like everything from cheese, milk, yogurt..even plain cocoa. Last week I tried using some yogurt again and didn't 'go' for like 3 days after. Also if I eat too much sugar..even fruit sugar..it makes my stomach really bloated and painful. In the morning I give myself lots of time and drink about 1-2L of water along with coffee before I eat..just guzzle back that water. And make sure its room temp. And also someone mentioned stress..yes I agree! Stress is a HUGE factor. So in the morning, do something that completely relaxes you while you are drinking your H2O and coffee. I sit at the computer. It takes my mind off of everything else. Oh and oats! Plain, natural oats work really good. I make sure I have a bowl everyday with Splenda (I also add egg white just cause I like the taste). When I started eating plain oatmeal everyday I started being normal.
IBS is horrible. I want to help people that have it because I had it really bad when I was younger. If anyone wants to email me please do because I'll def try to help!
