Severe morning sickness...no appetite

Quote  |  Reply

I am 8 weeks and I have got it bad. All day. Not bad enough to be in the hospital on an IV ( not yet anyway ) but I have almost zero appetite. What do I do? I want to eat but even thinking about most foods makes me want to puke. I am losing weight too.

Been there four times and I feel for you. Can you tolerate cold green grapes? Frozen? Suck on them if you can. Cold fruit or juice sipped slowly even before you get up in the morning if you can. If saltines are ok for you, nibbling slowly before you get up can help. I know its hard but try what ever works. Different things work for different women.  Eat small amounts whenever you can and try not to have that empty tummy for too long.

You probably have already heard this but that sickness means your body is producing amazing whopping amounts of hormones and thats good news for your body and growing baby but really makes it rough to keep food down. Heres hoping you get relief soon.

oh no!  poor you!!  that's terrible.  I had morning sickness as well.  I was able to tolerate saltines just to keep my something in my stomach, and then I would munch on carrots if I felt up to it.  maybe try whole wheat toast dry, since there's more nutrients in it?  I didn't get over my nausea until the 10th week.  Hopefully yours will go away soon, at least in the 2nd trimester.  hang in there!!  you have to eat.  When do you take your pre-natal vitamin?  Switch to taking it at night; since that was a major cause of my nausea when I took in during the day.  Also, flat ginger ale is always good for the stomach.  I would ask your doc if there's a tea you can drink to help calm your stomach.  I only get nauseas now if i DON'T eat; so I eat cereal w/ fiber a lot to keep my stomach feeling full.

And, congrats on your pregnancy!!
I know exactly how you feel!!!!  I am 14weeks and still get nausea but not near as bad as it was a month ago.  Stong smells along with an empty stomach seems to be the only thing that sets it off anymore, but before it was constantly.  What helped for me was ginger ale or sprite with crackers.  I lost 9 pounds in my first trimester due to both nausea and stress.

i had morning sickness really bad, also.  talk to your doctor, if the saltines don't work.  I was put on dramamine and that didn't work, it just made me sleepy, and i was still sick....he finally put me on a prescription drug that is used for chemo patients...I had to take it for the whole pregnancy...Hang in there, it does get better. And if you have to go the medicatin route, that is better than being hospitalized, and don't worry about the effects on the baby. I had two pregnancies with morning sickness, and I only gained 5 lbs with one and weighed the same at the end as i did at the beginning with the other, and my girls both were very healthy 8 1/2 lbs.  I lost 20 lbs with my second baby before i started gaining weight.  Hang in there!

And CONGRATS!

Thanks for the support, ladies. I got some prescription Phenegran from my doctor. It actually works pretty decent. Yes, I'll admit I am concerned about adverse effects on the baby but I have looked at several forums online and most women who took meds for nausea say their kids turned out healthy. Yes, it probably is better to take some medication to be able to eat than to have to sit in the hospital on an IV. Of course a first pregnancy probably brings out all a woman's worst fears.

I had no idea you could get meds for morning sickenss!!!!

I had it so bad - all day - throwing up - it was horrible.  From week 6 to 12 I ate nothing but cheerios, bagels and plain speggetti (I remember daydreaming about a slice of pizza).
