Let's share some ideas for coffee!!
I love coffee, can't live without them. I guess a lot of you are like me. It's good to know that there are so many good things in coffee, but the way i take it make me concern. Although i always take with skim milk and artificial sweetener, there's still 80cals in one cup, sometimes i feel it's more of an unecessary calorie intake.
what about u guys? any suggestions?
It's a pity that most coffee shop serves espresso coffee instead of plunged,I usually drink plunged coffee with sweetener only, but I can't drink espresso, can't stand the taste and there's no fun drinking it.
Last year I was drinking it with about 1 teaspoon of sugar, but I suspected it was making me get off to a bad start having sugar first thing in the day, so I weaned myself off of it. I buy good coffee, usually with a flavour like vanilla or hazelnut and brew it straight into the a preheated mug. Love it!
Also... doesn't caffeine speed up metabolism? thats what I like to tell myself :)
Caffeine does boost your metabolism (not sure how many cals it offsets, but still...) It also makes it easier for me to stay focused in school. When I have a long afternoon academic discussion session ahead of me, I have an 8 oz coffee at lunch.
Coffee drinkers develop less Alzheimer's and dementia than non-coffee drinkers, too. There are limits of course - more than two 12-oz cups a day is generally considered an "addictive" level and that much caffeine starts getting detrimental.
I have started to drink herbal teas and black and green teas as well. I have one six-ounce cup of black or green tea in the morning (sometimes two), and then possibly a coffee at lunch (if there's an afternoon session) but then I stick to decaf herbal tea if I go "for coffee" with friends later. I've gotten used to herbal and green tea with no sugar or milk, and it gives me a 0-cal alternative to ordering another coffee. (And it still fulfills the stated purpose of "going out for coffee", if you know what I mean).
At work, I go the equal and coffeemate route, with a teaspoon of sugar (somehow, sugar is so much better, but I only need the 1 teaspoon). Right around 50 cals.
At home, I brew it with some cinnamon and nutmeg sprinkled in with the coffee grounds, then equal, brown sugar, and coffeemate. Right around 50 cals, but so much better because of the spices and brown sugar.
For the flavor, that little pick me up in the morning, and that wonderful warming feeling if it's cold and/or rainy, the extra cals are worth it!
OR i use plain coffee and add a squirt of sugar free caramel or vanilla syrup! (my newest addiction)
either way you're lookin at no more than 20 cals for a great tasting coffee =)
Another good option is lite or fat free cool whip! :-)
Personally, as a woman who will someday be in the high-risk category for osteoporosis, I refuse to consider the skim milk in my coffee "bad" calories. The caffeine and artificial sweetener in it may not be great for me, but skim milk is a good thing.
I've tried putting just a 1/2 tsp or so of baking vanilla in my coffee. Also, a Tbsp of baking cocoa (with some Equal or Splenda or something) is nice as well. If you can take the time to froth your milk with a blender or mixer or something before you add the coffee. . .mmm, worth the effort. Talk about heaven. :P
I am a huge iced coffee drinker.
I make decaf chocolate coffee (Millstone Brand) and then keep it in the refridgerator. So in the morning I just pour in some milk in a glass and then pour the coffee in over ice. Its SOOO good. SO So good...and no sugar added...just milk and coffee.
- vanilla, 1/2 capful to a cup
- cocoa, a spoonful
- Stevia natural sweetner
- cinnamon
- Splenda SF flavor in hazelnut or kalua
- skim milk
You know what, I don't normally drink coffee but with all of the good ideas you guys have for it its making me want to drink it =)
By the way, since Im not a big coffee drinker =p what is plunged? regular maybe?
