Sharp pain in chest?

Quote  |  Reply

Sometimes, all of a sudden when I breathe, there would be this really sharp

pain in my chest. And to make it not hurt, I would have to stay motionless and

not breathe at all, for a couple of seconds. I asked my friend about this and she

said she sometimes gets it too. And she is a VERY healthy person (eats at least

1,700 calories/day) so it wouldn't have to do with undereating and

underweightness. Does anyone know what this is?

Precordial Catch Syndrome

I get this every now and then too. Can't really relate it to anything (being full or empty, anything like that XD). Sometimes I like I get it more if I slouch but that could just be in my mind.

From what I read it's harmless, just painful as anything!

Sometimes I even feel/hear (I either hear it, or think I do because I 'feel' it) a 'pop' when it 'fixes' itself o.O. Popping is never something you wanna hear in your chest I would have thought, but I'm still alive and kicking.

The pain in your chest may or may not be the same as your friends.  Please go see your doctor.

I was having chest pains in the area of my left shoulder but mine was more of a constant ache with a sharper pain when i took a deep breath. After three days of this I went to doc and was diagnosed yesterday with pleurisy, an inflammation around the lungs that can cause pain when breathing. They gave me anti-inflammatories and told me to rest a few days. This could be what you have but whenever chest pains are involved it is best to go see your doctor just to be on the safe side.

I also get those pains often. Yesterday even while watching a movie i said ouch my bf said what i just didn't talk, breathe or move so it wouldn't hurt then after i told him that i got a chest pain and if i remain still it goes away fast.

Thanks for the link sugarsweet!

I used to get this all the time about five years ago for a few months and then it went away. About two years ago it started happening again and lasted for much longer--upwards of three minutes, and I started to get really concerned about it (I never have a "pop" feeling though).

I went to see my doctor and he didn't know exactly what it was (he didn't do any tests) but said that it could be a type of growing pain due to my ribs or chest growing, and told me to come back if it got worse... of course after that it went away again.

My personal trainer told me that it happens to her sometimes and the way you can fix it is if it's painful when you breathe in then you have to breathe out really hard, and vice versa if it hurts when you breathe out. I haven't had an opportunity to try this so I can't tell you if it works.

strawberry-dolly -  there are  too many factors here.  First of all whats your age? are you on Birthcontroll, and do you smoke?     - those are contibuting factors to a medical condition called pulmonary embolism. Its a blood clot in the lung.

Or is it substernal  (middle of your chest) chest pain, no change when you press on the area that hurts, you become very sweaty, you feel like your going to pass out? - these are symptoms of a heart attack or angina, when you dont get enough o2 to your heart.

those are serious, but there are many other minor and major things that can be happening.

You could be deficient in vit' minerals, or fats.......  could you have pneumonia? or a cold.....the list goes on and on

to have a good assessment and idea what could be going on a full cardiac work up, complete blood count and urinalysis may be good diagnostic tools!!
