Maybe you strained a muscle? They are called "shin splits" for a reason, lol. I suggest you rest it and ice it. Stretch it if it's not too painful. If you can't stay away from the gym, buy an AC bandage and wrap it tightly, and then tape it. That keeps pressure on your muscle and makes it a bit less painful.
hmmm thanks for the advise.
I mentioned shin splints because Im guessing whatever causes shin splints can happen in my femur. I will see if I can go out and buy a wrap. I took the day off today, so maybe tomorrow it will magically be fixed. ;)

Eh. Better hope magic exhists lol. I've strained both of my quads, and I had to them for about 3 or 4 weeks, but then again, I never rested (one was in the middle of high school soccer tryouts ugh). It stops hurting after 2 weeks or so, but I still wrap them to make sure they dont get hurt again.
But, then again, it might not be a strain.
I am going through the same thing. I was evaluated on friday. The DOC says tendonitis. Less impact for awhile and some inflamation drugs. LEt me know if you need more ideas or help.

aren't shin splints when the muscle pulls away from the bone? i don't see why the same thing couldn't happen to your quad. it's common in the lower leg because there are high-stress points at both ends, but i imagine you could do the same in your thigh.
shin splints are caused when the arch of your foot doesn't come back up after a running stride, there is a muscle that runs down the front of your shin that wraps down under your arch and back up the shin, when the arch doesn't rebound back up it will cause strain on the muscle on the front of your shin, which will cause it to tear away from the bone. So you can't get shin splints anywhere else, it is possible to rip muscle away from the bone, but it would take an incredible amount of force to do it.
That is a great explanation of shin splits, that is always the hurdle I face when it comes to running. How can you prevent them? I have heard not doing too much too fast (what is too much too fast?), toe points and heal flexes to stretch, write the alphabet with your ankles and walking around on your heals like a duck. Are these things true, do they help? I am signed up for a triathalon in August and that is a fear I have. That I will train and get in great shape, but will get shin splints two weeks before and loose everything.
