They stink! I had to take off the rest of my cross country season for my high school because of them. It's been about two and a half weeks since I have run. I'm going crazy! I HAD to work out yesterday bc I felt so blah so I went to the gym with my dad and did some biking and stairclimbing.

Has anyone else dealt with shin splints? Any idea on how long I should take off from here? Should I try running and see how it feels? My dad and I are doing our yearly Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, 5 miles, so I really want to get back in my running groove soon!

don't quote me on this, but I think you can start running again before you are 100%.  Important thing is listen to your body and not let the shin splints return.  What are you doing to correct the imbalances that caused the shin splints in the first place?!?!?

Do some research on exercises for shin splints!

Good luck!!!

sit on a bench or high step with legs extended, knees soft. put an exercise ball on your shoelaces, extend arms with hands on top of ball.

flex feet towards you while pushing down on top of ball, which will end up on the toes of your shoes.

relax feet. repeat.

that works the tibialis anterior (the muscle that hurts).

I read an article the other day that said shin splints are basically caused by the shin muscles not being worked out as much as the other muscles in the legs.

The article recommended the following:

Stand on your heels, with your toes lifted off the ground. Walk (small steps) for about 15 seconds without letting your toes touch the ground.

Repeat this process with your toes pointed outward, then pointed inward.

That's one set.

Do 3 sets, see if it makes a difference!
