Shocked and Upset...
I've been really adamant about eliminating transfats from my diet since about 2003. There were a lot of delicious foods (processed and packaged mostly) that I gave up. Many times I could even taste the hydrogenated oils, and would get totally grossed out.
We don't keep anything with transfats in our house, and I make every attempt to order whole foods when I'm out.
Anyway... so here's where the shock comes in.. Every morning for YEARS now, I have had coffeemate French Vanilla creamer in my coffee. I don't care what the rest of my diet has consisted of over time, this has been a staple for me.
I don't know why I never looked at the ingredients.. Maybe it was ignorance, maybe fear... But now I'm realizing I've been ingesting like 3-4 grams of transfats every day (I do love my coffee on the light side, haha). WTF??!! I hope I haven't done as much harm as I'm imagining.
I"m so mad. What the heck is so wrong with actual milkfat??? Why couldn't they just use actual milk? Anyway.. I switched to Silk (soy) French Vanilla "creamer," but it really isn't as tasty.
Any suggestions on a tasty vanilla flavored cream product that isn't chock full of oil?
I haven't tried this but how about buying half-and-half or coffee cream and mixing in some vanilla extract?
it took me awhile -- but I have gone the vanilla soymilk route (I like it "light" too, I use 1/2 c. in my 16 ounce travel mug :D) I use the 8th continent vanilla (and have since switched to the "light vanilla" to save a few more calories) and find it creamier than the silk soymilks. But there definitely was an adjustment period!
Milk doesn't keep as well. I like to use a combination of vanilla protein powder and vanilla almond milk.
You haven't done as much harm as you're imagining.
Thanks everyone! I tried the vanilla extract thing.. it comes out WEIRD. It's just too sweet. I'll have to see if I can get vanilla powder, maybe, like htey stuff they have at Starbucks. That might work.
The 8th Continent.. I don't have that at my grocery store! I just checked the website and it says it's at Walmart. My Dad does some shopping there, I'll have to see if he can pick some up for my house!
... Protein powder and vanilla almond milk, see - that sounds delish. What brand almond milk do you use? Also, are you using soy or whey protein powder?
Thanks!
I get the super big bag of EAS protein powder at costco...it's the cheapest at around $30 for 6lbs. It has a combination of Casein, Soy, and Whey...that way all may bases are covered. Trader Joe's also carries a variety of protein powders for reasonable prices in smaller containers. I also use it in smoothies or sometimes when I run out of kefir for my smoothies I just use it with water...takes me around 6+ months to go through a bag, but the expiration is 2010 so I'm fine with that.
For the almond milk I generally get the Pacific natural foods brand, but I've also used the blue diamond. To me they taste the same and the Pacific is 20 cents cheaper at Trader Joe's. I've gotten almond milk at Wholefoods when I was travelling in a half gallon size which cost me the same as the 1qt size...grrr!
Great, thanks!
I will totally pick up that bag of EAS powder.
And, I know what you mean about WHole Foods... The only thing I go there for now is Kombucha tea. Otherwise, it's TJ's and the farmers' market all the way. Who has that kind of money??!!
whole foods more like whole paycheck!
sorry had to say it....
That's what my sister calls it! I was shocked that I could get a 1/2 gallon of refrigerated almond milk for the same price as a quart of the boxed...doesn't make sense and I can't find it again in California near me. Sob!
Something even more distressing? My husband runs with a guy who is a bug exteminator, He told us that 97% of his clients are Whole Foods shoppers!! Yuck! Pay more and get bugs? - no thanks

I saw another post once talking about how they had to be shut down in one location because of bugs in their meat. O_O!
However, this is likely a correlation, not causation. These people clearly have more money to spend on getting every little bug exterminated.
I have never shopped at Whole Foods. I love my Publix!
