Will My Shoe Size Change?

Quote  |  Reply

I can't believe I'm asking this, but here goes.  Before I gained all this weight, I wore a size 9B; I now wear 11 wide.  I'm down 70 pounds from when I first started dieting in 2004, but still wear the same size.  I "assumed" my shoe size would go down, as well, but it hasn't, yet.  Those of you who've lost a large number of pounds, did you notice a change?  Thanks for not thinking I'm an idiot for asking this question.  Embarassed

I have no idea, but I sure hope it works for you. I'm about a 10W, and wide sizes are hard for us fashionistas to find. I'm hoping that with weight loss it will go down. I'd love being normally.

Yes!  I've lost 33 pounds, and all my shoes are too big now. I think I've lost at least 1/2 a size.

I have lost 30 pounds in the last year, and have lost a half size (from 8B to 7 1/2 B)

Thanks for your responses.  I'm hoping that eventually my shoe size will change.  Still can't understand why it hasn't.  But, since mabenner1 and 062121 indicated size changes, maybe there's still hope for upsidedownkitten and me, too!!  Thanks, again, all of you, for taking the time to answer.

I'm down about 60lbs and I still have the same size 8's.

Darn frustrating, isn't it?  Just doesn't make sense to me, to lose 60 or 70 pounds, and not have foot size change.  We'll just keep plugging along jinxozzie.  Don't know how more you have to lose, but I'd like to lose at least another 50.  HOPEFULLY, I'll go down at least one shoe size and not have to buy wide shoes anymore.  Wink

I read somewhere recently that if a person's been overweight for a while, the extra pressure can flatten the arches of the feet and thus cause shoe size to increase. I'm assuming that's irreversable. Sorry to be vague, I can't find the article...

my bf outgrew size 13 shoes this year. he had to buy all new shoes and boots in a 14. i think his arches collapsed, he swears his feet just grew. he is 42.

my dad said his arches collapsed a year or two ago, he had to start buying an 11 instead of a 10.5. he is 75.

it could be a "structural" issue for lack of a better term, although i know i have seen threads discussing foot size changing with weight gain/loss.

not an idiot. Smile

Oh, my parnoa, I never even considered that, but it sure makes sense.  Maybe that's what happened.  I've been quite overweight for over 30 years now.  And, I'll bet you're right; it could very well be irreversible.  Bummer!  I thank you very much for your response.

You and parnoa indicated just about the same thing, watergirl.  I'll bet that my extreme excessive weight for so many years caused my arches to collapse, and I just wasn't aware of it.  Disappointing, but something I'll just have to live with, I guess.  Thanks for responding; I appreciate it.

Shoe size certainly increases when you gain a lot of weight.  I went from an 8 - 8.5 to a 9 - 9.5.  After I lost the the weight (60 lbs), I was right back in my old size.  Your feet carry fat just like anywhere else, plus they tend to get wider with the heavier load.

Wow! I recently realized that my feet lost weight--crazy I know. Before I gained weight I wore a size 9 shoe and after my gain went up to a size 11. I've recently lost almost 40 lbs. and my size 11 shoes are too big and my feet slip out of them. I still have another 30 pounds to go and I am assuming that once I reach my goal I will be able to wear my size 9 shoe again.

You are soooooo lucky, harmonpl.  Good for you.  Evidently, I've been so extremely overweight for so many years that my arches collapsed.  At least, after reading some of the above responses, I'm assuming that's what happened.  I've lost 70 pounds and no change in shoe size.  Bummer.  But, I AM happy for you!!  Laughing

My shoe size has gone down 1 size and also don't have to do the wide widths anymore.

If you have fallen arches due to the past strain on your feet, you might want to see a podiatrist for orthotics to help build them up again.

I had plantar fascitis and used orthotics to fix them no more foot problems.

Thanks much, debackerfan, good idea.  Have to say, though, it's not that my feet hurt.  It' like upsidedownkitten inferred; hard to find fashionable 11W shoes locally, and when buying them online you never know if they're going to fit right.  However, it's my own darn fault for letting my weight get out of the hand, and then waiting so long to do anything about it.
