Shorted out my car stereo- any car buffs or electrical engineers out there?

Quote  |  Reply

My Garmin GPS's adapter has been falling apart, and today it finally broke. I put it back together and plugged it back in to the cigarette lighter see if it worked (stupid, I know), and it apparently shorted out my car's stereo system. I have a 2006 Scion xA. I scheduled a service appt, but if there's an easy way to fix this, I'd like to avoid the charge. I'm also really hoping I didn't also fry my Garmin...

i would think you blew a fuse. check your fuses and see if one (or more) are blown.

Where are the fuses?

check your manual. I have 3 places where there are fuses. 1 is under the hood. There are 2 inside the car; one when you open the door (both drivers and passenger) its on the side of the dash board.

I have worked in the auto repair field for ages...generally speaking you dont normally fry anything except the fuse (first)...thats why they are in the system to protect the system...as stated earlier check your service manual for the location of the fuse box...some auto makers stick them up under the drivers steering column....others under and behind the glove box...some are under the hood of the car on the firewall....
