I try to go to the gym, but the times that I can go there is usually a lot of people there.  This discourages me a lot. I don't like exercising in front of other people. My boyfriend asks me if I want him to run/ walk with me. I always tell him no. When other people are there I get very shy and want to leave right away.

Does anyone have any tips for this?

I don't have any tips, but I can empathise!

When I used to go to the gym (a big 24-hr Fitness in my parent's home town), I used to get really uncomfortable. It helped me to just blast loud music from the moment I checked in until I left, that way I could focus on losing myself in that (and my work out) and try to pay less attention to those around me.

I still cannot get myself into classes though, which I think I might really enjoy.

P.S. Ditto on the boyfriend thing -- I just started seeing someone new who is very fit and he's bent on getting me to run with him. I'm just too embarrassed, I can't bring myself to do it!

I HATE exercising in front of other people. One of the (many) excuses I have for not running is that there are too many people. I live on a college campus and unless I run before 8 (which I do in the summer because it's too hot any other time, but I hate in the winter because a) it's cold and b) it's dark) so unless I run before 8 there are a million people out going to class and stuff. I do NOT look cute when I'm running. Plus it's really embarrassing when I have to walk or I'm jogging super slow.

My boyfriend and I ran together once. Yep. Not a fan of exercising with others, so I can totally empathize with you. We've been together for over 5 years and I'm still embarrassed at my lack of fitness prowess.

I'm with you, collier, about wanting to do classes too! I would love to, but I'm too embarrassed. Sigh. The pains of being self absorbed.
