"Sick" calories?

Quote  |  Reply

Kind of a weird topic, but just trying to get some thoughts here.

I was sick this morning, food poisoning or something, and ended up losing some of my breakfast.  (It was an Odwalla protein shake---apparently my body does not agree with those!)

I guess there really isn't a way to track that, just mentally, and I hate being sick.  Luckily I have been able to keep everything else I have eaten today down.

So yeah, I'm trying to stay on track---any thoughts, suggestions on calculating today?  Maybe cut my portion in half and call it a day?

Hmm.. if you threw up soon after you ate (a couple hours or less) you likely didn't take in many calories, since it takes a fair bit of time for protein to be digested in the stomach then amino acids absorbed in the small intestine.

Really, I wouldnt count the shake as anything. If you were sick, it's probably better to err on the side of more calories than less, since your body will likely be burning more calories to adapt to the sickness. And obviously if you're sick you don't want to severely underfeed yourself for the day.

Liquids process alot quicker then solids....if you have 1000 calorie deficet i would probably eat a little more if I was hungry but I don't think you really need to worry about it....
I've heard 50-70 percent of calories are absorbed, even if you throw up. That might be just a myth, though?
no, this is correct.  this is why purging is not an effective form of weight control, and hence why many individuals who struggling with bulimia are normal-to-overweight.

If your body rejects them, why bother using protein shakes? What makes you think you were poisoned?  Laura by the way, she didn't admit to having an eating disorder. But, anyway back to the chick who wrote this post... You should just find something else to drink in replacement of the protein shakes, there's no use of eating or drinking stuff you're body hates and brings back up.
2/3 of the calories are still counted. And if you threw up over a half hour after you ate, you still get all the calories.

I got this information from Abnormal Psychology Second Edition.

I used to be bulimic, so, I tend to know stuff like this.
