I just started to eat 2500 calories a day today but at lunch I had to throw part of my 'dessert' away because I started wretching. I guess my body just couldn't cope with being that full, is this normal?

I don't know how to go on eating the rest of my meal plan for the day, it's 5.20pm here and I still have to eat a big dinner, dessert and cereal as a snack. Is it ok to eat less than 2500 on some days to prevent being ill?

Thanks

Retching is often a mental response as well as a physical one. If you're not used to large amounts of food you're going to have to 'eat smarter' as well as 'eat more'....

For example... Split your meals up a little more so that you're eating 'little and often'.  This is easier on the digestion than big dinners.  Don't drink before or during meals because the liquid will fill you up too much... but drink after meals to help your digestion.  Choose foods that are high in calories but low in bulk..... 300 cals of nuts is a much smaller article than 300 cals of cereals and very, very small compared to 300 cals of broccoli.

If you still need to eat supper today see if you can rearrange the meal so that it is lower in bulk but higher in calories.  Instead of the cereal snack, try a glass of full-cream milk perhaps.

It's important to persevere and not give up at the first glitch.  You need 2500 as a minimum every day and the more you do it, the easier it will get.  Good luck

Thank you for the advice, I am going to try and have a look at rewriting my meal plan to condense the calories.

Hi Emma, I wasted a lot of time feeling physically sick by forcing myself to eat a lot of healthy high-fibre foods which is all well & good, except when trying to gain as it filled me up so much! Definitely have more calorie-dense foods instead of large quantities of low-calorie foods. I find topping oatmeal with peanut butter & adding nuts and hummus to a lot of things really helped. Good luck! :)

Thanks, I definatly need to start eating in high calorie, low bulk foods.

gi-jane =  I find that I am constantly thirsty, could this be a felt of my former low calorie intake? I have been tested for diabities etc and am all clear. It is hard to not fill myself up with drinks because I am constantly drinking throughout the day and have pints of water with my meals.

Is it better to just suffer the thirst so it's easier to eat? Will the thirst pass as I rehydrate with food?

Thanks

Overweight people can find they confuse hunger for thirst so they eat when they should, in fact, drink.   I think you may be doing the reverse... and yes, we get a lot of our fluids from our food.   If you're going to drink something, make it a high-calorie drink like fruit juice or full-cream milk.  But drink it after meals.

Thanks, I'm going to try to get into the habit of only drinking after meals, it will be hard at first but is worth it if it will make it easier to hit 2500.

Use your thirst as an advantage:  drink high-calorie beverages when you're thirsty.  Have you ever heard of Ensure or Boost?  They're weight gain drinks, and the "Plus" versions of both are 350 calories per 8 oz (1 cup).  Here are some "sneaky" ways to add calories without bulk:

  • granola or other high-calorie cereals (often 300+ calories per 1 cup!)
  • and you can have your cereal with ensure's or boosts!
  • use cream, whole milk or ensure in coffee or tea
  • have juice
  • dried fruit (130 calories per 1/4 usually)
  • peanut butter & jelly on a bagel is incredible
  • whole milk or chocolate whole milk
  • oatmeal (make it with whole milk or something, then add lots of things like nuts, dried fruit, etc)
  • nuts are great!  Very healthy, very high cal
  • yogurt is an easy way to add things too (like dried fruit, nuts, candy, cereal, dry oats, etc!)
  • cream-based soups
  • dark chocolate
message me if you need more ideas or help!  Good luck, and congrats on taking your first step towards recovery!

Thank you so much for the ideas!

I am definatly going to use the high calorie cereal suggestion (bought granola today) because it's something I can easily eat 'a lot' of. I'm also going to try my first bagel (with a lot of jelly or nutella of course).

Thanks for the support I really do appriciate the help Smile
