Got sick at the gym last night

Quote  |  Reply

Soooo whoever it was that said not to do HIIT on the same days as NROL4W was right!!!

I did some really intense HIIT on the elliptical trainer last night, 30/90 intervals (that's intense for me as I am very out of shape)... then I proceed with Workout B of Stage 1 of NROL4W. I was in the middle of doing the dumbbell shoulder press, when all of the sudden I felt super nauseous. I dropped (not literally) the weights and bolted for the women's locker room. Next thing I know, I'm vomiting in the toilet. UGHH!!!!

So, note to self: don't do HIIT and NROL4W on the same damn days!!!

That's all :)

PS - does anyone know why this happens? Is it just such strain on your body that it makes you physically sick?

It's called 'over-exertion'...   Exercise isn't doing you any good at all if you're vomiting at the end of it.    If you're out of shape, work up to vigorous exercise more gently.

...and always do weight training BEFORE cardio training.

Both HIIT and NROLFW are pretty intense workouts.  So yeah it may have been just too much for your system.

I have to add though.  If you are goin to do any type of cardio HIIT, regular intervals or just steady-state, do them after your lifting.  There is no way you can push your muscles to lift as heavy as you can if your body is already worn out from cardio.

^beat me to it!

at least you made it to the toilet  Wink.

Isn't puking a good ab workout?

Haha, totally!  So is hacking up phlegm...so by tomorrow my abs should be awesome, right?

My HIIT pushed me close this morning. It was weird since I haven't experienced that feeling in a while, and I've also been doing HIIT fairly regularly the past month. I did just switch back from running to the ellpitcal though.

Throwing up is so thoroghly unpleasant. Sorry that happened to you!

yeah I should have known that. That makes total sense. Trust me, I did not want to throw up. That wasn't my goal!!! I'm sorry if this post made it seem that way... it wasn't at all! I was just out of town on a work trip for 9 days and didn't get many workouts in while I was gone.. So I thought I could kill two birds with one stone by doing HIIT and NROL4W on the same day at the same time. WRONG.

Okay, so now that I know to do cardio AFTER lifting (and will still probably do HIIT on days I don't lift), shouldn't I do some sort of "warming up" before I go into my lifting? Like maybe a quick walk on the 'mill to get my blood flowing? Or am I just an idiot here? I'm going to go w/the latter, but I'd appreciate some opinions!

Thanks guys :)

Oh and clint, my abs don't feel like they've been worked out! LMAO!

Warm-up routines vary greatly. I like to row for 10 mins. Some people run slowly for 10 or so minutes. Or hop on a spin bike for about 10 mins. Others just do whatever lift is planned, but with lighter weight as a warmup, then do their heavy lift.

Notice I kept mentioning "10 minutes"...Wink

Then you're not puking hard enough!  Get back out there and chug a 26'er of tequila!  Slacker.

Like others have said do the cardio after weight lifting heavy.  You can warm up by doing some light weights sets or whatever, but save the hitt for later.  Today I was doing NROL fat loss II and my heart rate got up to over 168 -- I'm gonna be 50 in a month so this is technically very much over my "Max"  Weight lifting is an awesome cardio workout.  -- Its not aerobic workout but it is cardio and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
