side cramp = running stitch... or... death!?

Quote  |  Reply

I know someone JUST posted about side cramps while running, and I took the advice for a bit, but I'm going on day 3 of horrible cramping on my right side directly below my rib cage. I went overboard on monday, and ran 5mi, 2 in the am, and 3 in the pm, about 50mins of running total (i usually only do 2 total a day). I didn't get the cramp while running, but rather afterwards that night, so i stretched and went to bed. i didn't run that AM, and all day my side was achy. I ran last night, about 2.8ish at a decent pace, and had to stop before my 3mi because my side hurt and I didn't want to push it. So today, I wanted to take a "rest day" but not totally lose cardio, so i took a 20 minute walk and right off the bat the pain was so bad i almost went home. but i kept going, tried to breathe deeply like the other post suggested, and while it dulled, it was still there. i'm now sitting at my desk at work freaking out thinking what could possibly exploding inside me! :( my side still hurts a lot, and i'm just so frustrated. my "day off" usually consists of about an hour of walking, and some abs, but i don't think i can!

:( any help at all is appreciated... i just really don't want to miss something big and hurt myself more!

EDIT!: just in the time since i posted this, it's gotten worse and more sharp?  other than this stupid thing, i feel great! not tired, not sore, just stupid side.

When you run, are you sure you have proper posture? Sometimes a forward leaning posture can really affect side cramps and your ability to pull breath in. But if you're having pain when you're NOT running that might be a signal of something completely different.

no, my posture is horrendous... but i'm working on it.  and yeah, i'm sitting still and there's still a dull pain.  normally i'd just advil it up, but i'm afraid to..

Appendix?

that's what i'm the most afraid of. but other than this, i feel fine... haven't been doing anything weird. not feverish, and it only gets really bad when i'm breathing hard. could it be a pulled muscle in that area?

this article leads me to believe that if it was appendicitis, it'd be lower on my abdomen, not right below/under my rib, and that it wouldn't be so localize.  :\

It is worth a trip to the doctor. When I had appendicitis, I had no fever, only a dull pain in my right side.  No trying to scare you but your doctor would know best.

Patyh is right, there's no harm in seeing a doctor. Random but could it possibly be gas?? cuz that can be super painful and last for awhile. just a thought

this is going to sound really stupid, but i'm sitting at my desk freaking out.

i'm afraid that i'm like. psyching myself out about this, and making it worse.  like it's literally gotten worse since the post, but i'm not sure if it's because i'm stressin' out about it.  i took 2 advil but it's still there.  mostly right under my rib, but kinda my whole right side, now that i think about it.

i really don't want to go to the doctor because i have movie tickets and dinner plans for my 3 year anniversary with my bf.  this day sucks. :(

It sounds like a knot to me, brought on by poor posture or some error while running.  Try stretching more and see if that helps.

It sounds like a pulled muscle, if the cramp was from running it should not be persistent.

It could be gas as well, especially if it feels like pressure as opposed to just pain.

I would go to the doctor, personally. Or try an over the counter for your belly. You won't enjoy your date if you're worrying about it!

well, i'm glad to hear some non-appendix related responses, but based on what i told the nurses, they want me to come in this afternoon.  my bf is coming with me (what a wonderful date location) and hopefully it's nothing and we can carry on with our date!

the bad news is it's moving down toward my belly-button level.  jesus, i hope this is all psychosomatic.  >.<

wish me luck!

Well, technically you could fracture a rib just from sneezing. I'd deffinetly go and get it looked at right away.

Have you ever been diagnosed with having ovarian cysts? I only get them on the right, and they hurt most when I exercise. When I have one my boobs really hurt, and my rights side just aches all the time.

well i went to the doctor.  (and made it to my dinner date and movie thank god) but apparently it might be gallstones.  i have an ultrasound in the am.  i'm really just upset that a) i hurt b) my whole plan is thrown off.  gags.
