Side Effect from new prescription

Quote  |  Reply
I was recently prescribed a new med that has a possible side effect of constipation.  Well, I'm still going but not as much as before.  So I'm not totally constipated but I am somewhat uncomfortable.

I've been drinking lots of water (2.5-3 liters a day) hoping this will help.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

I've been battling this too.  In my case it's pain killers that are making me constipated.

Look in the herbal tea section of the supermarket for Traditional Medicinals teas.  They have one called Smooth Move that contains senna, which is the active ingredient in over the counter laxatives like senacot..  The advantage of the tea is, you can brew it and keep it in the refrigerator and drink just a couple of ounces each time you take the medicine.  I find that this is just enough to keep regular without the explosive consequences of taking an entire dose of senna.

I've also found that adding a tablespoon of ground flaxseed to my smoothies or sprinkled on yogurt, helps a lot.
Wow, flaxseed.  I never would have guessed.

Thanks Claire!

I have that problem too and I take metamucil for it.  It works like a charm when I remember to take it.  I have the berry flavor iand it really doesn't taste bad.
High fiber....You can find it in many forms..tabs, etc...  Walmart has the fiber therapy = two teaspoons in a glass of water 1/2 hour before meals (every meal)  or couple of tablets ..they cost a little more but are great for when you are working or going out...and there is always a glass of water around ... My Dr. said the fiber is good for you,  keeps fat moving and you stay regular ...  also makes you start the meals with a fuller stomach...   just a thought but it works for me!  ;-)
