Alright, so I've always loved cottage cheese, but I've grown up eating the fully fatty, large curd style.  Now that I'm cutting back I've noticed that the low fat versions of cottage cheese don't come in large curd and generally have a sour taste to me.  I guess I'm just picky but its been very difficult for me to accept...

So far, I haven't had many problems accepting more healthy substitutes for some of my favorite foods, but I find that Cottage Cheese is just something I can't compromise on.  The calories in a small serving of regular C.C. are not that bad so I'm having trouble convincing myself its worth the sacrifice.

So...is it?  Has anyone found a good lowfat cottage cheese that doesn't taste like old cheese floating in water lol?

I think it's ok to have certain things full fat, if you can eat them in small amounts and they aren't over-processed.

You can try one of the organic versions of lowfat cottage cheese; they're not the same as the 4% kind, but at least they don't have the carrageenan and other additives meant to replace the "mouth feel" of fat.  I grew up eating 4% cottage cheese too (one of my "comfort foods"), but I don't eat it much anymore either out of concern for saturated fat content.

My philosophy with cheese of any sort is 'full fat - small portion.'  I find the more intense flavor of the fatty cheese makes a little go a longer way - both in terms of taste and feeling full.  Of course with any dairy product, there's a concern about the saturated fat and the cholesterol.  Again, I control the portion size.  This works for me, and I'm a 4% cottage cheese fan from way back.

i'd definitely go with small portions of full-fat, too, but.... have you tried mixing it with fruit or yogurt? it might make it sweeter...

In my experience, draining the lowfat cottage cheese seems to get rid of the sour taste that sometimes bothers me, but there's nothing wrong with having the full fat version.  Really, how much difference is there, calorie-wise, in a small serving?  20-30 calories would be my guess.

If you like full fat, have full fat. Just be mindful of portions. Loosing weight and living healthy does not mean switching to all none-fat.

Even if you arent lactose intolerant, the Lactaid cottage cheese is really good and isnt watery at all. Ive noticed daisy 2% isnt watery either. Most of the generic brands are blah. Idk, its really just trial and error. Try different ones until you find one you like.

for the difference of about 10-20 calories between regular and non-fat cottage cheese (per serving) is it really THAT big of a deal?

non-fat = 90 cal

1% = 100 cal

2% = 110cal

*per 125g serving / half cup

I'd go for the 2%... what difference does 20 mesely calories make?

Carmen, I'm used to the 4% which is 190 calories.  Its not so much the calories I worry about as the fat and the other stuff I guess.  But unfortunately that's what makes it so good haha.

I might just try to get used to the 2% or 1%...at least until I have developed the will-power to keep my portions low on the 4%.  I'm at the very beginning of my weigh-loss journey and I don't think I'm 'there' yet but hopefully that's not too far down the road.

I will try draining it too....the watery parts really make sick to my tummy.

Thanks for all your help, guys

If you live in the southern US, Purity makes the best dairy products, IMO. Their lowfat cottage cheese is 80 cals/1.5 g fat...the fat free kind is better-tasting than any other brand, but I still buy the lowfat kind.

I have enjoyed this Cottage Cheese for seven years, I can hardly remember "real" cottage cheese but this satisfies.

Small curd...I prefer small curd while my husband prefers large curd and I think this cottage cheese is a mix of both though leaning more towards large.

Watery at first though not dissimilar to how yogurt appears when opened,it is just enough to either pour out or stir in -minimal amount.

This cottage cheese is not in your face salty, it is just right.

I am not aware of any sour taste.

The only real difference is the creaminess -think plain potato versus potato with butter, sour cream and chives-both good, though you get used to plain.

If you must have more creamy goodness, try zipping a portion in the food processor/blender and adding additional spoonfuls of the curds.

However my family is satisfied with YODER's Cottage Cheese and actually every product we have so far tried.

I hope this helps - enjoySmile

Just a side note, we do have 4% cottage cheese in Canda, along with dry, pressed etc.

I personally don't like the taste of full fat cottage cheese. 1 or 2% is the best for me. Nonfat is just gross. It's not worth the 10 less calories or whatever. But if you like the full fat, then eat it! It's very healthy. Duh. Cottage cheese is the best.
