Silly fat percentage question

Quote  |  Reply

A simple silly question (I hope):

I understand that abs are usually hiding beneath a layer of body fat, so how much fat % should your body have for your abs to show?

I'm guessing it's around 21 - 24% because the "fitness" area for women.

lol sorry for Men Fitness is considered between 14–17%.
For men.. if you're lucky you can see the top two at 15%, though 12% is the norm. You need to get below 9.8% to have the full sixpack with the linea alba - at least according to Charles Poliquin's latest article.

Competition form for a male bodybuilder is - umm, roughly 3-4%, and that low a level is only maintained for about 3-7 days when peaking for a show. For females competition form is 7-9%, again only maintained for a few days at most. The Jessica Alba/Simpson look is generally achieved at roughly 15-18%; a tad low for health but not as bad as competition form would be.
Thanks so much everyone for your answers. Hopefully then I'll see the top two soon!
ok i am totally confused because i have used the online calculators and they say my bf% is like 17, and i can't see my abs. i can feel them though!

the online calculators are not very reliable.

make an appointment with a Personal Trainer and get a skin-fold caliper test performed. if you weigh 110 or so (as stated in an unrelated post) you may have to work on and build up your abs.

How can you find out what your fat percentage is?
piina, the most accurate (also most expensive and least available) is a submersion test.  next best option is a caliper test.  make sure you find someone who knows what they're doing, or you won't get an accurate number.  cheapest and most accessible (you can get one for home) but least accurate is a scale that measures body fat through conductivity.  i think mine is accurate to about +/- 3%.  but you won't get even that accuracy if you're retaining water or dehydrated, so i make adjustments and don't pay too much attention (except that if my weight is up and my bf% is down, i know i had too much sodium the previous day - which is useful in itself).
