Single Girls (and Guys) - How much do you spend on groceries??
I'm just curious because I am a little obsessive about spending money on food. It just seems like the biggest waste because it is something that is consumed so quickly with little lasting benefit other than good health. I get paid twice a month, and have a grocery bill of $80 per month. I try to cut it down more, but anything less I believe might leave me feeling a little deprived. I saw once that someone spent $800 month on groceries, just for themselves! That is ludicrous! Here is how it breaks down.
boca crumbles $2.99 16 oz. salmon $4.36 4lbs. chicken breast $7.96 tomatoes $1.00 2 doz. eggs $2.46 3 cans black beans $1.65 bag of lentils $1.50 onions $1.50 5 -16oz bags of frozen veggies $6.00 cucumber $0.75 musrooms $1.50 2-3 lbs fresh fruit $3.00 low cal bread $1.77 Total $39.81
I typically spend $60ish per week on just myself - I try to shop sales, but I buy mainly the same things every week. I also buy lots of fresh food, so that forces me to go at least once a week...
$80 a month? that is amazing, are you eating enough?? lol
He he, no kidding. Food is my second most expensive monthly "item" right after rent.
Well you know the good health is kind of an important benefit. Plus food tastes good, what would you rather spent your money on, trinkets?

GOsh I wish I only spend that much a month. I spend anywhere from 30-60$ a week :-/
Wow, that is really good budgeting. We have three people here to shop for groceries. Two of those people though are really big eaters. About 600 dollars per month I think is what we spend. I wouldn't dream of cutting that down. And 80 dollars for you! I don't know how you could go any lower.
edited - sorry didn't see the "single" part of the post.
I also spend between $30 - $60 per week.. my weekly purchases include mostly veggies, fruits, soy milk, cheese, eggs (the most perishable things really)... I buy my proteins and grains about once a month.
I really don't think it's a waste considering I'm investing in my health!
I probably spend about $40 a week - maybe $30 if I eat dinner at my parents' house all weekend. Of course, those are Canadian dollars, so they're not worth as much.
I don't think I want to reply considering you completely BASHED the $800 a month grocery person... while I don't spend THAT MUCH a month... I definitely DON'T spend JUST $40 a week - although I guess maybe if you do not count the gum, energy drinks & magazines... perhaps my bill would decrease by a bit, but still, I invest in my health so I spend a lot on nutritious foods (plus I shop a lot at Whole Foods! ha ha ha!)
There's something wrong with that list..... if you buy 3lbs of fresh fruit a month that means you're eating about 2oz of fruit a day.... Just one piece of fruit every 2 or 3 days? Low cal bread at $1.77 can only be one loaf.... One loaf lasts a whole month? Do you mean $80/week? Or do you eat out a lot?
My grocery bill which is for 2 people and which covers every single thing we eat (including packed lunches etc.) is £50 a week which I think is about $80
I spend roughly $120 a month...every week I am buying several pounds of apples and oranges, and live off of milk and oatmeal in the mornings haha. It gets pretty cheap if you buy things when they're on sale...and fresh produce doesn't hurt either!
I think i spend around 120 too. I don't eat that healthy though I must admit, I do buy alot of frozen foods.
I do buy fruits and veggies though, but they tend to go bad quickly :/
Depends on the week, my budget tends to seesaw back and forth, it might be $80 one week and $20 the next. I'm adjusting the amounts for about what I use in a typical week, I frequently freeze 1/2 or more of an item.
COSTCO: 1 lb chicken breast $5, pineapple $4, mango juice $4, whole wheat tortillas $1, cherry tomatoes $5, pea pods $3 = $22
Trader Joe's: Kefir $6, Protein Bread $4, Luna Bars $5, Almond Milk $2, apples $2 = $19.
Basically around $40 per week supplemented by whatever I buy when eating out.
if i'm doing major shopping i can spend up to about $80 and if it's just replenishing some things probably no more than $40 or $50...
I spend between $25-50CND depending on if I'm stocking up on something (hurray for sale shopping!).
I can easily do $25-30 a week but I recently started making a lot more money than I'm used to (university student on a year long work term) so I find myself more willing to buy some more expensive items at times.
And I rarely eat out, like maybe once a month.
That's my shopping list for two weeks.
I spend about $600 per month - just for me.
I buy mostly organic (but not all) produce, fresh fruit & veggies - nothing frozen, and natural meats from the local health foods store. We don't have a Whole Foods or a Trader Joe's. I have checked out the generic grocery stores and Walmart but find prices are about the same for comparable items. It doesn't really matter where I go, I'm still going to pay about $2-3.50/lb for organic apples, $3.50/lb for broccoli, $7/lb for organic spinach, $3-5/pint for fresh fruit, $3-4/box of cereal, $2-3/dozen eggs, $3-5/loaf of bread, $5-6/lb for chicken breast, $8-12/lb for fish (tilapia, shrimp). Add in an $8 bottle of wine and a 6-pack of good beer every other week or so and it doesn't take long to break $150 per week. I truly wish I could lower my grocery bill but if it means eating less healthy food, I'll just have to find other things to cut out of my budget.
shane82 how much FOOD are you consuming?? It doesn't matter how expensive it is, if you're spending that much on raw food (ie, you're not counting restaurants or takeout) that's OBSCENE.
I buy high end juices, bars and produce yet remarkably make do on about $30/week... I think your issue is quantity, not quality.
Edit: To be fair I didn't include alcohol, but even that's less that $10 a week for, like you said, half a pack of beer or bottle of wine a week.
That's interesting, fallingstars - for me, food is the only thing that I don't feel guilty buying. :P But I start to feel drained if I think about it too much.
On average, I spend about $46-56 a week (more commonly in the $48 area. Yes, I'm a nerd and keep track to that extent :P). It all depends on what I'm needing/wanting, really, but every week I spend a good amount on the same general veggies/fruits (I know I've eaten my weight in apples many times over), dairy (cottage cheese/milk), protein (tempeh, tofu, beans, fish if I need it), and then grains or other things that I'm needing/wanting.
I love bulk food sections. Most things (nuts, oatmeal, quinoa!) are so much cheaper when you bag them yourself.
I spend about $350/month. I clip coupons like crazy, buy the cheapest option I can find, buy in bulk when I can, and go in with a list that I stick to- usually only a few off-list items. I like to eat a variety of foods, and that really amps up the number of things I have to buy. I really need to find a way to cut down on my grocery bill.
