Hi there,

I work out 6 days a week and I am trying to lose belly fat (20lbs), and trying to eat better too. But when I come to work I sit all day and all I want to do is eat. I bought some celery to munch on and I will have like 15 cheez-its. I am trying to eat within my calories, but after all this working out I am not burning enough calories and eating more cause I am bored at work. Any suggestions? It will really help me. I just want this fat to go away, I work to hard to have this. My weight is 155 and I am 5'5" and I am 38 years old. Please help me lose the belly fat and the 20lbs.

Thanks,

Kari

It looks like you know the answer already.  You need to stop eating because you are bored.  The end.  If you are really doing exercise and diet correctly, this is the last thing to tackle.

I suggest not bringing too many snacks with you and leaving any cash at home or in the car so you cannot buy anything in the vending machines.  I always have a few healthy snacks around to tide me through if I get hungry, but if you genuinly are not hungry, you don't need them around tempting you.

Also, if you get the urge to eat out of boredom, take a mini break and go get some water, or just walk around a bit.

Better yet, tell your supervisor you are bored and need more work to do!  That would be better for your body and your career.

Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it. Would that help with the belly fat?

If cutting out snacking at work creates a deficit(~300-500 cals a day is what I would recommend) and you are using your time at the gym well(weight lifting would be good) then yes.

I suggest reading through some threads.  Here are a couple to start you off.

If you are still confused, start searching through the forums on your own and you will learn lots!!

What sort of workouts do you typically do and about how much do you eat each day?  If you are looking for something new, I highly recommend this book:

Workouts include:

Mon-Treadmill-30 minutes.

Tues-Cross Trainer-30 minutes and weights, usually legs & abs

Wed-Treadmill-30 minutes and weights, arms & abs

Thurs-Cross Trainer-30 mintues and weights, legs & abs

Friday-Treadmill-30 minutes and weights, arms & abs.

Saturday-Only do cardio for like 60 minutes.

I eat like 6 times a day including snacks. I think I am going to up my cardio though to 45 minutes instead of 30. I am toning really well, just the belly fat is there. It is slowly getting smaller.

Yeah, I seriously seriously recommend that book I linked in the last post.  It is the closest thing I have found to a magical answer to everything.

I am by no means an expert, but I have found that lifting has given me much better results than cardio ever did.  I have been running for about a year(started out barely being able to jog for 6 minutes) and worked my way up(slowly) to 10 miles.  I still run for fun(did 8 miles this weekend on a family fun run) but have started focusing on lifting.  Ive only been doing it for ~2 months and havent lost any weight(I am still working on portion control) but can see huge differences in my body.

Lifting weights is really efficient(less time at the gym and fast results...esspecially for beginers, woohoo!) and can really help you on your fat loss goals if you give it a try.  Even if you decide not to do the exercise routine in New Rules of Lifting for Women, there is tons of great info in there.

how often you eat isnt as important as HOW MUCH you are eating.  Since you are on CC, you have all the tools you need to track how much you are eating and how much you should be eating.

Good luck!!!

Change up your snacks. Read the labels on everything before you buy or eat it. I make a smoothie using 1 cup of Vanilla Soy Milk, strawberries, and a banana and take that with me to work. Bring apple slices with your celery and some low fat Peanut Butter or Yogurt. Rice Cakes, Air Popped Popcorn, Water Crackers and the Laughing Cow squares are good too. Instead of cheez-its get some TLC (kashi) cheese crackers. The key is to count out your serving and once you eat them all that's it NO MORE. Drink water, water, and more water...

If I feel the need to snack outside of my healthy snacks that I bring with me to work, I go get something hot to drink. It's easy for me because they keep it so cold in my office. Green tea, herbal, or even decaf coffee if you just have to have coffee.  Once I drink that I feel satisfied and can wait until I get home for dinner. Once I drink water before and after my workout I am good for the night with maybe another light snack.

I factor in my snacks with my daily calorie count so I make better choices because I hate feeling hungry Frown

Thank you so much for all the input. I will look into that book and that smoothie. My problem to is I have to watch the sugar. I am not diabetic but my blood sugar has been known to be high a little bit. My doctor calls that prediabetes. It is hard to find food with low calories and low sugar. But I am willing to try anything at this point. I don't know how to count calories but I do have the book on it. Thanks for everything.

Hi!

When I started my desk job was when my weight began to soar due to boredom and constant snacking.

I found what helped me lose 15 kg was having set times to eat and having a healthy snack in between meals like this:

7.30am Breakfast
10am snack
12.30 pm Lunch
3.30 pm Snack
6 pm dinner
7.30pm snack

I found that having set times helped me strive towards not snacking due to boredom. Going on CC on the work computer also helped me with boredom Tongue out

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Thanks for that. I do snack in between meals, but I intend to snack a little more than usual. Thanks for all your input, I am going to be trying everything.Smile

Flavored water works for me when sitting at a desk. It's mostly just the act of moving my hands (yeah like typing ain't enough lol) and bringing something to my mouth that I'm fixated on. Not only would it boost your water intake, but for me.. when it's flavored it kinda feels/tastes like I've eaten fruit or something.

Gum and water :)  Lots of water!

baby carrots, yogurt, water, and apples!! are all good snacks that help keep your hunger in check while your at work. and also the drinking hot beverages tip like green tea and/or coffee also help without adding much calories.

I didn't read all the replies, so I've being redundant, my apologies.

I read an article recently that found that exercise is the greatest help on the 'bad' abdominal fat. That it can be reduced even in the absence of weight loss. However, this is one specific type of fat, so no promises that just upping your workout would do it.

When it comes to mindless eating, that's why I keep a stock of cucumbers at all time. I slice them thin, salt them a bit, and much on them when watching tv, reading, whatever. They're cold crispy and salty, which is all my brain needs from food when I'm not thinking that hard about it. I have one beside me right now : )

While cutting out snacking might be 'best' doing something better that is sustainable is much more important, IMO.

i too have a sit down job.. i work at night.. even if you have a sit down job.. make sure to stand up around every one to two hours..your body needs this.. also, you'll end up feeling back apin if you just stick to one position over a long period of time..

i walk around the room after evry 2 hours..and if i need something, instead of having someone do it for, i do it myself so as to shift to another position or beter yet stand up and walk..

I buy the light and fit yogurts and stick them in the freezer, then when I am bored at work and would want a snack I get one of those out and it literally takes me about 45 minutes to eat, so its a healthy snack and it takes forever to eat!

Chew gum.

And thanks to you all of you who have responded.

maybe you should take a 5-10 min break and walk around your building so that way your burning cals and not eating cause your bored.

Good idea. I will bring my gym shoes to work everyday and walk. Sounds awesome. Thanks for that.

I know how you feel. Where I work, there are all kinds of FREE junk food snacks!! It's hard to resist because they are free, but I'm trying and I think I'm slowly getting better.

I try to bring my own healthier snacks and tell myself that if I'm TRUELY hungry, I'll eat a healthy snack, not the free chocolate or chips.
