Not quite sitting yet? Julia's almost 8 months already!

Julia's going to be 8 months on Sunday ...  OMG!

So, she's not sitting on her own yet.  Maybe for a little bit, a few seconds and she'll topple over.  She can sit on the couch, in her bumba, high chair, stroller-  just as long as there's something supporting her.  She's long-  but thin, 17 pounds 28 inches.  She's a ravenous baby-  eats three meals a day plus 3 1/2 bottles.

Is this normal?  I'm confused by all the milestones.  Doc said she really should be sitting by next month for sure.....any excercises I can do besides the normal ones to help her?  She's starting to say mamma and dada to us; individually-  and I SWEAR she called me this morning over the monitor.  Is that possible at almost 8 months??

This baby stuff still confuses me LOL.  But she's so great.

I've had one kid already and this stuff confuses me still! With the way they are constantly changing things, I can't keep up.

I don't think it's unusual for babies to not be sitting up yet. My daughter didn't sit unassisted until about that age. It wasn't anything gradual, either. One day, I took my hands away and she sat on her own.

Girls will typically speak before boys do. My daughter was saying several words by her first birthday and calling us mama and dada. I wouldn't be surprised if she called you over the monitor! Girls just seem to advance more quickly in the non-physical areas.

My son is almost 6 months old and is sitting on his own for short periods of time. He still has to concentrate and if he's playing with a toy, he'll forget he's sitting and fall over. I just try to have him sitting with little to no support every chance I get. I sit on the floor with him and keep my hands poised and ready. If he starts to fall, I just push him back up. I think the main reason he's sitting so early is because he's been rolling over for so long and he has an older sibling to watch. My dad always told me he'd do things earlier than my daughter because he'd want to be like her so badly. Guess he was right.

Babies are all different. From what I've seen on the internet, the typical age range for babies to sit unassisted is 7-9 months. Check out Dr. Spock's section on sitting up:

I think she's doing just fine :)

I would say that it is perfectly normal as no two kids are alike. Your daughter is developing in her own pace. My daughter was 9 months when she was able to sit on her own...two months later she was walking and very soon after that running ..
