Have any of you guys read it?
It totally freaked me out.
I usually only read fiction as well, but this book seriously sucked me in. I read a lot of parts out loud to my husband because it was so shocking (or hilariously true). It talks a lot about what food does to our bodies. Also went in depth about government conspiracies concerning USDA, EPA, FDA. Very interesting read. It's seems too hard to actually do what they recommend unless you're extremely dedicated and have money, but I've made certain changes to my diet because of it, and I would still highly recommend the book.
I read it too. It's hard-core vegan. I really liked the information, and it's presented in a fun, easy-to-read format. I ended up feeling some guilt that despite how much I believe the data they cite, I'm not committed to the hard work it would take to alter my lifestyle as they recommend. But I got over it. We each have to find the choices that we are willing to sustain for the long haul.
I know exactly what you mean! I was already a vegetarian when I read the book, and I tried for about a month to be a vegan after that, but it's a pain in the rear! Plus, just drinking organic red wine? Excue me, what? =) I love my beer and margaritas! Plus, a lot of the foods I eat regularly that fit best into my lifestyle while still being low calorie are, unfortunately, highly processed. I don't have the money to shop at the local Earth Fare Market... just way too many factors working against me. But I've lost 13 pounds and feel much healthier since I started exercising and using CC... even if I am still a likely cancer candidate =P
I tried to read this book, and had to put it down after a chapter or two. I couldn't continue to read about all of the "bad" choices I make in my life every day. I put the book down feeling like I had been scolded. I didn't like the idea of these two woman telling me how to live my life. I am much more comfortable with a "you be you and I'll be me" approach. Some people work really well with exact directions and can adhere their lifestyles to a prescribed plan. I have two friends who have completely turned themselves around by following a strict plan.
I tried to do weight watchers several times, and that's where I learned that I just feel so claustrophobic restricting myself to this and that - and the idea of committing to weight watchers for the REST OF MY LIFE terrified me.
I guess I saw some similarities between the Skinny Bitch lifestyle and the WW lifestyle. And neither would work for me. I like to be able to make my own choices, even if their not the best choices, at least they're still mine.
I'm glad that their words of wisdom on the vegan lifestyle have helped you. Perhaps I should have kept reading and picked out only the parts of the plan that would work for me like you did.
Route507too - I tried WW for a while too, and though I don't mind tracking my calories on this site, I try and stay away from anything too crazy anymore. I understand feeling like the authors were lecturing you (I still do many things they preach against) but if I were going to encourage you to read anymore of the book, I would sa skip on over to the part about the govt. agencies. You won't feel like you're being lectured at, you'll just be shocked, I promise, it's worth it!
