Any Skinny Bitches Out There Who Want to Support Each Other?
Hi,
My name is Mary and I have been a vegan for 17 years. I read the Skinny Bitch
book and am a total addict! What a hilarious book and it was a good kick in the pants for me. Just because you are vegan doesn't mean you are eating healthy foods.
I recently gave up all the nastiness that was in my diet...for example, aspartame, caffeine, preservatives, chemicals, white flour, refined sugar etc. I eat organic as much as possible and run away from processed foods.
I'd like to share recipes, stories and just good laughs and support with anyone else who is equally "on the program."
Mary
Hi Mary,
I just became vegan like a month ago (not for the first time, but I'm aiming to stick with it this time). I've been a vegetarian though for ten years I suppose. I just read that book and that did it for me once again...made me make the transition. The only way I was ever able to start eating dairy again was to block it out and pretend it didn't exist- but I have strong beliefs about it, so ignorance is not the way.
I also have Celiacs- so no wheat gluten, oats, barley, etc... so a little more restricitions on top of the vegan but I like it.
I just gave up diet soda (soda in general) and all artificial sweeteners too when I started the vegan thing which is my problem right now. I am craving a Diet Coke like no other. So I am completely and utterly on the Skinny Bitch diet and I absolutely adore it. Its weird how the two women really have no degree to go preaching all this...but honestly everything they say makes total sense. They made a believer out of me!
Hi!
I was vegan and then started eating cheeses and yogourt when I hit menopause early this year. I'm 39 and people were scaring me regarding osteoporosis (although I know better due to my own research from years ago) and I began eating dairy. I gained weight and started getting colds. Gross phlegmy colds. I read the Skinny Bitch book and that got me back on track. Dairy is gross and does gross things to your body.
You can try carbonated mineral water to get the feeling of drinking soda without the bad qualities. I'm hooked on it. Just be careful not to get the ones with too much sodium. I drink President's Choice.
Haunting the health food store as much as I do has opened my eyes to all the alternatives for gluten free diets. Do you have trouble finding foods you can have?
I bought a couple of vegan cookbooks yesterday that I am so excited to try recipes from. One is a Vegan Italian style - not a lot of pasta in it surprisingly and the other is just a general recipes one which has tons of yummy looking things in it. I'd have to check that one to see if its got gluten free recipes. It must be hard for you but then again, if you're like me, you like a challenge to find healthy things to eat that also taste great!
You're so right, the Skinny Bitches do make total sense and I love their delivery method. I laughed through the book which gave me such a positive attitude about it. My best friend and I talk like that all the time and people think we are horrible but it does get the point we are making noticed so I guess there is something right about it!
Nice to meet you!!
I think I have finally adjusted to the new gluten-free diet. There are so many alternatives to regular food that you merely need to open your eyes and you can find them. My friends get a little disgusted by what I eat sometimes with some bizarre combinations but I like it, so thats what matters.
I absolutely love to bake and cook. I'm at school but whenever I go home, most of my time is spent in the kitchen. I will have my own place next year and that is when I am really going to experiment with all the different flours and egg and dairy free cooking. I look forward to the challenge though. In the mean time, I have been cooking, mostly baking really, for my family on breaks and not tailoring to my diet. I just enjoy doing it, so I could care less if I have to eat it. My brother actually gained twenty pounds over my winter recess from school-- he was not thrilled, ha.
I actually have already started building up my kitchen for next year. I am going to get a red Kitchen Aid mixer for my birthday and I already own a ton of nice William Sonoma rubber scrapers, measuring tools, etc to match... I have been holding back on the cookbooks but I cannot wait. I cook a lot of things from different blogs that I keep up with and allrecipes.com. That is the greatest site!
I am actually surprised that I am the only person to repond to this post. I know a lot more people have read that book. But yes, definitely nice to meet you too! Keep me posted about any good cook book finds or whatever else that you happen upon. :)
I'm a skinny bitch too. I read the book 4 weeks ago and haven't looked back since. Cut out dairy, cheese, eggs, meats, and am a pescetarian (only eat shrimp or tilapia when out at restaraunts.
Please email me. I'd love to share recipes and progress. I'm trying to lose 17-20 pounds, am 5'4" and 34.
Glad to see this posting. I read Skinny Bitch about a month ago and was shocked at all the data. I'm still keeping fish in my diet for now, but have switched to almond milk and working on giving up the cheese. But as you know from reading the book, there's a little morphine punch in the cheese, which explains why everyone loves it. I told my best friend about the book and she's going back to being a vegetarian, and actually I think she's going to be vegan shortly. I have some eggs in the fridge I'll be cooking up and doing away with, but that will probably be it on the eggs. I like that the book doesn't condemn those who don't go totally vegan and they also tell you to work yourself into a plant-based diet gradually. I've been hitting the gym pretty hard as well the past couple of months so there have been a lot of positive changes with me recently.
I'd love to share recipes and find ways to incorporate new fruits and vegetables into my diet, rather than just the same old standards. Count me in as a Skinny Bitch!
Yay for skinny bitches everywhere!!
So as you can probably tell from my posts, I am extremely passionate about cooking, baking, the works... probably basically more with food in general, thus my being on this site. :)
But anyway, I am obsessed with blogs. I have quite a few favorites and I'll add the vegan ones here if you guys want to check it out. You may or may not be familiar but they are fantastic recipes with amazing photography to accompany with most.

http://www.godairyfree.org/Table/Recipes/ (not a blog but great recipes anyway... everything is clearly labeled. It is helpful with my gluten allergy.)

I have loads more but this is a good start!
I am finally reading the book! after reading about it so much on here :) and I am straight away back to being Vegan... "cold turkey" so to speak. I have been a vegetarian since conception (thanks mom and dad!!), I'm 21, I have digestive and allergy problems and often wake up feeling the likes of being older than my grandmother... I was vegan for a very short period of time during my first year of college. I had no oven, stove, and of course was on a college student's budget...so it only lasted on the upside of 3 months? I have since not had a glass of milk or eggs, unless they are hidden in my food (cookies, cake, pie) :( ... so I'm guilty, and my biggest vice CHEESE! oh how i love cheese! I am the type of person that can hear about passing gas, blood, and gore at the dinner table and not lose my appetite but when it comes to animals that all changes! I stopped eating eggs the moment I saw a picture of baby chickens in a dumpster, and Skinny Bitch has reminded me of that image. And for the cheese... when I was educated on rennet I haven't looked at this same since!
Count me in, I'm working on being a Skinny Bitch! But as for now I'm nearly 150 lbs... with a flabby ass!
I am going to have issues with the sugar thing... getting rid of diet coke entirely... and of course SPLENDA!!! a soy latte, with splenda has been known to bring me a lot of joy... and I need a substitution to this lack of quality in my life. I'll take any suggestions and support for cutting this stuff out as I can get!
Yeah, the book is so good. I just got in a fight the other day with my mom about my going vegan again. I had told her but she went ahead and sent me nonvegan brownies for V-day. I told her I would not even discuss the issue with her until she read the book... I know she will be at least vegetarian by the time she finishes it.
Congrats boda on being vegan again!!
And lolo, the healtheir diet in some ways may or may not help with that. It is different with everyone I believe. Eating so many vegetables and fruit initially will probably take your body a little while to get used to with all that extra fiber, but I think that in the long run it will help. I'm not exactly sure what you eat or what contributes to those problems for you but it can't hurt to give it a try. :)
Oh yeah! I bought the book at an airport the morning of February 3rd...finished it that evening....and haven't had any meat (still eating fish/seafood for now - I think if I take it one step at a time I'll me more likely to succeed long-term), coffee (which is HUGE for me since I used to drink at least one pot a day!), or soda since. I had some KILLER headaches the first week or so...now, I'm headache free!!
I LOVE the book. It reinforced some long-held (and supressed) beliefs that I have regarding eating meat. Skinny Bitches, along with recently discovering that my cholesterol is borderline high, helped me make a committment to become a vegetarian and to become healthy.
I'm 37, 5'4" and my weight is bouncing between 156 and 160...I weighed around 140-ish last April when I got married. My goal is 135 by mid-July when my husband and I go to Hawaii for his dad's wedding.
Yay Skinny Bitchers!!
My sister moved to LA about 8 months ago and bought the book, when she told me she was going vegan, I told her, "Yah right!! I could never give up meat!!". But we both cut out meat besides seafood and dairy and eggs. Then a month or two later, I read the book, and became vegan. I can't believe how much easier it is then I thought! We've both been vegan for 4 months, but I think we shared a doughnut on christmas day! haha! So that's the only time I cheated, and it wasn't worth it! My dear sister, though, thought that Krab was imitation crab (which it is), but she didn't know that fish was the imitation meat being used! So I had to let her know about that! haha!
So at first I was saying that I could never give up meat, and now I'm saying that I could never eat meat (or dairy or eggs, etc)! It's funny how things have changed (for the better)!!
Within the first 6 months of starting to cut out animal products and then going vegan, my sister lost 30 pounds!! Amazing! I lost some weight too, but not as drastically as her!! I feel so good though! I know that this is the way I'm going to be eating for a long time!
Now I'm following the Eat To Live plan as best as I can, but I really want to get the Skinny Bitch cookbook. Has anyone gotten it? Is it a good cookbook? Let me know!
YAY SKINNY BITCHES! I'm so proud of you all and happy to be one!
The book came into my life (read the entire thing in a few days) right when I needed it!
The positive effect the book has had on me......
I cut out all meats and dairy and coffee and I feel great! I treat my body as the temple that it is. I have also lost 7 pounds in less than a month!!!
GO SKINNY BITCHES!
my mom said she wouldn't read it if you paid her, so i'm a little skeptical. she told me she only breifly skimmed through for about two minutes, though, so i'm not 100% positive i want to rely on her review of it.
hmm...still contemplating...
My friend recommended "Skinny Bitch" to me and it changed my life. I am a reform Jew, so I already don't eat pork, but I did eat rare occasions of beef, and my husband and I were frequent consumers of chicken and turkey. The book changed my whole perspective on eating meat. One of my favorite quotes that constantly replays in my head: If slaughter houses had glass walls, we'd all be vegetarians. AMEN. I am 2 days into being a vegetarian, but still eating fish, dairy, and eggs. I live on a military base overseas (proud Navy spouse!), so soy products are hard to come by, but I chose them whenever I have a choice. I am also going to steadily replace my kitchen with organic products.
My advice: Dont be a ****! Read it! (Now I'm sounding like the book!
