have you noticed that the skinnier a person is the more they eat?

its just so unfair to me!

ALL of my friends are skinny. and none of them have to try. ive noticed they can all pig out and here i am having to watch my calorie intake. all of my friends think im a freak. theyre all 'just eat all these cookies! just have some double fudge chunk ice cream! it doesnt give ME love handles'

GRRRRR.

please, please, is there SOME way to make your metabolism go up tenfold?!?

I was like that until I had my baby. My friend had TWO kids and is still 96 lbs and can't gain! *She is only 4'9*

I have to say...everytime I see her I get more motivated to get back to 100lbs. Seriously. Every time I see her. lol
Well, I don't know about tenfold, but exercise will boost your metabolism.
don't worry... I ate whatever I wanted in high school and then afterwards gained 15lbs pretty quickly after eating mac and cheese and drinking beer... so there is a possibility that skinny people can't eat whatever they want forever :) Plus, even if they are skinny, imagine how messed up their health is... cholesterol and such... that's no fun.
Yupp, some people's metabolisms are naturally higher than others. Doesn't mean they won't eventually slow down.

My older brother was a STICK all through our childhoods. He could eat whatever he wanted and LOSE weight. He was very active though. But, so was I. We both played sports at the same time and ate the same things, but he was stick thin and I was the chubby kid.

He went to college and gained 15 lbs, but he was in marching band, so he kept active. Still ate like crap though. I've always had to watch what I eat, so I got in the habit of monitoring my eating habits from an early age. I lost weight (5 lbs) when I went to college and kept it off.

Once he got out of college he packed on another 25 lbs, for a whopping grand total of 40 lbs that he his now overweight. All because he didn't eat properly and adjust for his lack of activity.

I gained 10 outside of college because I didn't change my eating habits to compensate for the lack of activity.

Now we both eat sensibly and try to be more active and are losing weight.

Eventually their metabolisms probably slow. Trust me, you might have to monitor your eating habits now, but you will be much better off for it down the road.
Not always.  My brother-in-law's a stick and drinks nothing but Mountain Dew and eats little else besides beef jerky (he'll probably kick the bucket here soon 'nuff).

However, my wife's skinny and she eats like a bird.  Same goes for my mother.  Another skinny person I know plays soccer obsessively.

There's too many factors here to claim that all skinny people have high metabolisms.
Hmmm...my opinion is that there is no such thing as a "high metabolism".  You may think that your friends eat a lot but really they balance it out and eat less when you aren't watching.  They are probably are more active than you as well.
fallingstars I disagree. I've sat and watch my best friend eat an entire pizza, king size snickers, half a carton of ice cream and wash it all down with dr pepper, and the most exercise she gets is her fingers while playing xbox. She is TINY. I watch every bite of food that goes into my mouth and exercise every day and can't lose weight. lol
^That's another thing.

When I was skinny and had trouble gaining weight...I DID eat whatever I wanted.

BUT...when I was going to school I wouldn't eat all day. Couldn't eat breakfast because if I ate early in the morning it would hurt my stomach. During the day I would have a soda and maybe a some candy. (Because I never even went close to the school food...ever)

Then at night I would eat a lite dinner somedays, somedays a huge one. On the weekends I would eat whatever I wanted. Junk food, fried food. Whatever. I think the key was that I didn't eat these things ALL the time. There were periods that I would not eat mixed in with those times where I would eat whatever I wanted.

Same thing goes for when I was out of school and working. I didn't actually gain weight until I stopped working and the periods of not eating weren't taken into account.

Silly me, I didn't realize that I couldn't just eat whatever I wanted ALL the time without gaining. I never even considered the fact that I used to go these periods of time not eating.
actually, fallingstars, that isnt exactly the case. i have a friend who is a size 00 and she eats probably three times as much as me. i know for a fact she isnt in any sports or any after school activities and she spends almost all of her time on the computer.

another one of my friends (i've slept over at her house), i've been to in-n-out with her one time. she had one of those hamburgers with two patties, the special sauce, and french fries with cheese. she is a size 1. until very very recently, when she joined volleyball, she was just like my other friend above^. inactive. ive eaten breakfast, lunch and dinner with her before. breakfast was buttery fried greasy yummy grilled cheese, lunch was in n out, and dinner was pasta with tons of parmesian and butter. again, she's a size 1.

so yes, i do believe in fast metabolisms. its hard not to.

and im watching my weight and im a size 7 :(
There is a such thing as a high metabolism, 2 people that live near me actually have to eat alot to keep from wasting away. Seriously, one girl who was obese her thyroids were damaged which made her metabolism out of whack thus she got tiney too quick and had to eat huge amounts of peanut butter sandwhiches a day dr prescribed to stay above 80 lbs.

A boy that used to work under me had to eat 4000+ calories a day and take meds because he was born with a medical condition that caused his metabolism to be very high and out of whack. So there is a such thing as a high metabolism.
bump
Eh, regarding hyperthyroidism, my father and sister have Grave's Disease.  With my father, he was always very thin due to his huge thyroid, but has struggled over the past 10 years or so with hypothyroidism after the prescribed radioactive iodine killed too much of it off.

So, what are you gonna do?
I agree... but I also think that unless there is a medical reason, their metabolisms will slow when they get older and/or less active, and things will catch up with them... unless they alter their eating habits accordingly.

Just my 2 cents
I hear you Katie, and I don't know how they do it. When I was in high school I didn't watch what I ate and before I knew it I was at 135 lbs (I'm 5"4 1/2)!! I started to exercise A LOT and to pay attention to what I eat (I miss dessert!!) ... I'm now between 110 and 115 and I'm satisfied :)

The thing is... people keep telling me "Oh, have some cake, you're so little" -- "Are you counting the calories?? come on you don't need to do that, you're tiny" What they don't understand is that if I don't watch what I eat... I will NOT be tiny anymore. I guess some people just gain weight easily... just like other people never put any on.. : (
yeah i know! i want to get to a size where people just automatically assume i dont have to try to be thin (:

but i dont know if thatll happen.
how is it helpful to compare yourself to these people?  why waste energy stressing over "fairness"?  why not put your energy into something positive instead of focusing on your complaints?

i'm sorry, but complaining accomplishes nothing.  you're just making yourself miserable.
pgeorgian:  Amen!
im not complaining, i'm venting

im sorry if you bottle everything up.

i know its unreasonable to compare myself to girls who dont have to try to be thin when i do, but i was only pointing out the unfairness of their situation. they dont even have to worry about their weight. that is what i was venting about, pgeorgian.
Personally, I would rather be commented upon as someone who is health conscious, rather than the thin person who stuffs themselves with junk and every greasy food in site...there is no "size" where people assume its easy for you - people have commented to me before (and I am not a size 0, I am a 6) but I am always proud to say that I am trying to be healthy, not thin. It really just depends on what your goals are - to be thin or healthy? Change your goals and you will change your outlook and maybe you will be happy at any size, as long as you feel good.
I am at boarding school, so i pretty much know who eats/doesn't eat and how much etc etc...

And i have many friends who can eat whatever they want- 3rd, 4th helpings + lots of tuck between meals, swim maybe 2 times a week, and still stay very slim... And i do think it is to do with metabolism, because the 2 people i'm thinking of specifically have parents who were the same until they turned about 25 and became pretty much obese, so it'll probably catch up to them.

But then another of my friends has thin parents, so its probably in the genes.

I myself have quite slim parents, and of course if i overeat everyday [i ate 3 ice creams a day + full meals and snacks] last summer for a term, and went from about 55kg to 58kg. I'm now down to 51/52 after becoming vegetarian, struggling with what seems to be a borderline eating disorder, and less snacks....

But in front of my friends i eat chocolate and stuff, and then when i'm alone i eat less, so it seems to them like i can eat whatever i want [i hate sports] and still stay very very skinny!!!

But in actual fact i have to be kind of careful, and I try to balance it out.

Its a combination of balancing out and metabolism.....
