Got home after a weekend of camping last night, and just as i was about to settle in with the BF for a movie, i let the dog out. Went out to check on him, and noticed him playing with a new friend...
Murphy got blasted right in the face, and he REEKS! luckily, i was able to keep him outside while my bf ran to the store for tomato juice, and we doused him and scrubbed him. unfortunately, i don't think the tomato juice really did much good. i've googled and there seem to be several home rememdies, but there are also skunk odor removal products at petco. Does anyone have an recommendations for stuff that worked in the past? Don't want to waste my money on the store bought stuff if it doesn't work!
i got nothing. poor stinky murph...
did the tomatoes temporarily turn him pink?
ps - worst reply ever. could i be more useless?
My friend's poodle was sprayed by a skunk a week or so ago. He found a solution recipe online - peroxide, baking soda and liquid handsoap. He said it worked on his poodle but the smell is on his hands. Maybe google it and see if you can find the exact mixture? And get some gloves. Ha.
It's ok SLO. Here's the worse reply ever.
Geez Jules, that stinks!
I got nothin else, carry on.
Use fresh (unopened) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Hydrogen peroxide eventually turns into water (H2O).
I think this is the solution he used. There is a warning, though, to keep it away from a dog's face and eyes because it's pretty harsh. So, my advice may be useless.
Hydrogen peroxide works well. Basically the o2 molecules attach themselves to the molecule of oder and neutrealize it. But you need a lot of it to get it to work though.

1 quart (or liter) of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, H2O2.

yeah this seems to be the solution that i've seen online mostly, but since the concentration of the smells seems to be right on top of his snout near his eyes, i'm worried to try it!
think i'll go to petco and check out the stuff they carry, see if it has similar warnings. if it does i'll just make the homemade stuff and be really careful to just dab it on his stinky face or something.
thanks!
and thanks for nothin SLO and igloo ![]()
excuse me, you never answered my pressing question:
was murph pink during the tomatoes?
if you use the peroxide mix, you can smear his eyes with vaseline to protect them some.
My dog got skunked and it took months to get rid of the smell completely. Everytime he got wet you could still smell it.

he was pink during, but not after a good rinse :p
and py, that's a good idea, i might try that! i've pretty much accepted that he's gonna stink for a long time. at least skunk smell isn't super offensive to me, so it won't be horrible.
I'm kinda embarrassed to admit this, but I actually like the smell of skunk. (outdoors at least)
It reminds me of summertime, camping, and when I had a farm. :(

it reminds me of um, something people smoke.
move to vancouver! if you live where i live (the westend), it's all you smell somedays. the smoke-related during the day, and skunks at night. charming.
I used a combination of vinegar and dawn dish soap -- diluted in a bucket of water. Dawn has a degreaser, which helps to cut through the oils in the skunk spray. It took two baths -- one right after the other -- to get rid of the smell on my poodle.
Then we used the left-overs to scrub the carpet couch and other places she had been rubbing herself after the incident.

yikes, i am SO glad i actually saw him get sprayed so i was able to get him from the yard to the tub without contact with anything else in the house!

I use lemon juice or vinegar to get rid of garlic smell from my hands. I think the acidity does something to the odour - same reason people use tomato juice. I don't know if this works for fur though...hmmm???
Vinegar and lemon juice work really well. The lemon juice is just to make the vinegar smell better.
Works pretty well on dog pee too.
I remember when Yellow Dawg got sprayed. My ex had her out hunting and she took off after a skunk. We were lucky, she was fairly far away from the skunk and the wind was blowing hard at her back. She ran through a mist of the spray and didn't take the spray full on.
It did soak into her skin though. For months after that she stunk every time she got the slightest bit wet.
Poor stinky dog.

lucky! i'm pretty sure Murph had his snout as close to the skunk as he could possibly get it. he cornered the poor thing and was play bowing at him.
maybe your poor Murphy couldn't resist - maybe he was ... under a spell...

My dog got sprayed, and we tried EVERYTHING! And he would smell pretty good for a while, then the odor would just come back.
We finally figured it out - the stupid dog got sprayed in the MOUTH! So his fur wasn't that bad, but everytime he'd come pant on you, there was skunk!

hahaha very possible! he seemed quite shocked that his new "friend" did something so rude. he came running over to me shaking his head and sneezing. but then he kept looking for mr. skunk anyway!
