You guys all know that you burn more calories sleeping than watching tv..... Laughing

I was having a convo with a friend of mine (from CC as well) and she's majoring in kinesthiology... or something like that... so she knew quite a bit about health and the human body.

anyways, she said that sleeping burns more calories than being sedentary.

i couldn't believe this!!! it seemed like something too good to be true!!!

here's my question:

Given the same amount of time, would you burn more calories sleeping, or being sedentary (staying at home, on the comp, watching tv, etc.)???

I expect the difference is marginal.  If you had a spare couple of hours why would you do either? ... Tragic waste of time.

tragic waste of time? i think NOT!!

some people out there really do love sleeping you knowwww!! and some NEED extra hours of sleep!!

and i love sleep!

but then again, this was simply a question out of curiosity bahhhh

one of the reasons that you lose more weight when you're asleep is because, presumably, unless you have a sleepwalking disorder, you won't be eating anything when you're asleep

and when you're awake, you will, sedentary or no

Smile

oversleeping actually is more likely to cause weight gain.  It's recommended that you only get about 8 hours of sleep a night.  You may burn maybe 2 times the calories by sleeping instead of watching tv or whatever, but imagine how much more you'd burn if you woke up at a decent hour and went for a morning jog or to the gym.  Don't get me wrong, I loves my sleep, LOVES IT SO MUCH!!  But when I oversleep, I become sluggish and lazy and I end up sitting in front of the TV anyways pigging out.

Sleep is a time for the body to work and repair...which means that it will burn up calories.  So a certain amount of sleep is needed to do this work.  Some require more sleep than others.  However, not sleeping enough often will alert one to desire to eat more, which puts on weight gain/balanced by decreased sleep.   The key is to stay within one's healthy calorie range....have proper sleep for the body's nightly workout  (smile)....and wake up to being as active as possible to aid the body in it's effort.  Yes, sleep is great!!!!!

you know i always weigh less on the next days after i am able to get a regular night sleep ( i work 65 hrs a week and often go about 3 days a week where I am up for about 30 hours or so before I get a nap, but it isnt until the 2 nights a week I am off my night job that I see my weight go down were it should be) I always considered that my real weight.
