sleeping in and reaching calorie goal

Quote  |  Reply

since it's summer, i've been sleeping in, sometimes even to 2pm... so my question is: should i be making up all my calories i missed while i was sleeping (breakfast, lunch)? or should i just eat dinner and go about my day like normal?

you should probably have more than just dinner, but less than if you were awake the entire time. maybe reduce your intake by 150-200 cals that day and eat the rest. regardless of whether or not you were sleeping, the body is burning calories and needs energy so make sure you don't use sleeping in as an excuse not to eat, that could backfire!! how many calories do you typically try to eat in a day? what are your stats? goals?

i try to eat 1,700 a day... and i'm 5'5 and i weigh somewhere around 100-105- i never ever weigh myself so i don't really know.. but i'm just trying to maintain my weight right now.

Sorry love, with a bmi of 17.4, you're underweight and your energy needs are more like 1900 with no extra activity and more than that if you're working out. you should probably raise your intake if anything and don't restrict AT ALL even when you sleep in because you are already at an unhealthy weight. sorry if this is blunt but it really is in your best interest to gain a little, or at least let your body decide what is a healthy weight by eating enough and letting your body settle, not forcing it into a certain mold by restricting your calories. hope that helps!!

hm well CC told me i had a healthy BMI... and i don't look sick and i'm not tired so i wasn't too worried.. but i'm definitely not restricting, i actually have to TRY to meet 1700 cause i sleep most of the day away and my friends don't eat that often

17.4 would be a generous bmi since oyu said 100-105, that's the calculation for 105 so it's actually even less than that. how old are you?

What do your friends have to do with your health? Eating is not simply a source of pleasure, it is also the means by which you provide your body with energy and key vitamins and nutrients. When you undereat your body misses out on these all-important components of overall health and well-being. Please keep in mind that the decisions you make in regards to your nutrition now will affect you throughout the rest of your life. What matters more: your vanity or your long-term health? Think about it.

because when i'm somewhere with them and they don't eat i don't have any way to eat unless i walk somewhere by myself which is really weird.

Bring a snack with you or eat something before you leave the house. While they should not necessarily become a mainstay of your diet, high-fiber protein bars can be a decent source of nutrition on the go.

Well, then bring a a couple protein bars instead of just one. Additionally, you could also take some dried fruit or trail mix with you as well.

at 15 years old and low active, you still need 2000 calories to maintain your weight. you're almost there. so like vincent_louis has stated, take energy bars [luna, clif, odwalla, are all great options] drink odwalla smoothies if need be, take trail mix, dried fruit, bananas, granola clusters, beef jerky [if you're not a vegetarian], pretzels, string cheese, anything that travels well...keep these snacks with you!!

bcm.edu states that you are at risk of being underweight and a healthy weight is from 104-144, don't let that fool you though. you are at the 7th percentile for your weight and 104 is the absolute minimum, with 124 being ideal...smack dab in the middle. your bmi is 16.7 but being that you're still a child it is more acceptable than an adult, however you are at risk and should probably increase your calorie intake to the recommended amount because what you're eating could explain your low weight.

all i can tell you is i am purely jealous - i am taking summer classes so it doesn't feel like summer one bit - i get up at 7 every morning! oh envy!

If I sleep in until noon (as I often do on a Sunday - after getting up to feed the cats breakfast then going back to bed), I eat less calories than normal but more than just dinner.  Essentially, instead of having breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, I just have breakfast, dinner and snacks.  So, instead of eating 2000 cals/day, I have about 1700.  It's not intentional; it's just what winds up happening, and it works for me.

hey susiecue...look at her height and weight, initially i said the same thing as you but she is underweight and shouldn't cut calories at all, in fact 1700 is still not enough for her!!

i'm pretty sure i'll be fine at 1,700.. i've been eating that for a few months now and i haven't lost any weight- i've always been classified as "underweight" my whole life, even by doctors and they've always told me "some people are just naturally skinny"

Sure, if you don`t notice the harm of something immediately, it means it`s good for you. Like cigarettes, for instance.

I don't get it.

She means that while undereating may seem harmless now, it can actually do a substantial amount of damage in the future. While you may not be losing any weight, the fact that you are not gaining weight can be just as detrimental, since your teen years are when you build up your body both inside and out. For example, not consuming enough calcium now could lead to osteoperosis in the future, since bone mass is largely constructed during the teen years. Just be careful and keep in mind that you only have one body.

I just want to observe that almost this whole thread has turned into a criticism of this girl's normal, consistent body composition when all she was asking was whether to eat to compensate for sleeping in! My suggestion is: Listen to your body, eat when you're hungry, and if, when you wake up, you feel like eating breakfast foods, lunch foods, or dinner foods, just decide based on that. And in regard to the "friends don't eat much" situation, I've had the same experience, and I'll usually have a piece of fruit with me just in case, or, if you're really hungry, try just asking "is anybody hungry?" or "does anybody feel like getting something to eat?" You might be surprised to find that they're nippish too. And anyway, it's summer, you're all hanging out together, and I doubt any of them will get angry if you feel like getting lunch or something... Jeez guys, focus on answering the questions that are actually asked on these forums.
