Sleeping in the second trimester

Quote  |  Reply

I'm just hitting the part of pregnancy at 16 weeks where I'm supposed to start sleeping on my side.  Unfortunately, I always sleep on my stomach or back and am waking up all the time now because I'm uncomfortable on my side or because I've accidentally ended up on one of the forbidden sides and am afraid I've hurt the baby.  I have a body pillow, but I regularly toss it out of bed aroung 1:30 am because it drives me nuts!  How did you guys get a good night's sleep while on your side?  Thanks!

I'm a stomach sleeper so I understand your frustration. I didn't use a body pillow but several regular pillows. I put one behind me so I wouldn't roll onto my back, put one between my knees to ease hip pain and I held one which kept me from rolling onto my stomach. It was horrible if I had to switch sides but I was mostly so tired that once I went to bed, I didn't wake up and move until morning.

I don't know what else to tell you other than using multiple pillows instead of one giant one. :(

I managed to still roll over almost on my stomach while big as a planet! I'd put a pillow under my top knee to support my hip and viola! My midwife said there is no major harm in sleeping on your belly while pregnant (if you can, that is).

I never would've spent the money ($50ish!) but a good friend heard my complaints enough and bought me a pregnancy pillow for Xmas. It's from Boppy and it's curved to have a place to put it in between your knees, a spot to rest your bump, and a part to hug to you. I was ALWAYS a stomach sleeper so sleeping on my side was hard to get used to at first, too. My husband is always right up against my back so that prevents me from rolling onto my back.

I hope you get some relief! I am 32 weeks on Friday and I have had a horrible time sleeping more than a few hours since around 16-17 weeks.

I totally sympathize with this.  I too am a stomach sleeper and when I was pregnant it was really hard for me to stop sleeping on my back or stomach.  I moved my bed against the wall and put pillows between my partner and me so I had very little room to move around.  Also a pillow between my legs really helped me to not move around so much.  Sometimes I would also sleep on the couch with a lot of pillows so I didn't have room to move.  Good luck!
