Getting sleepy mid-afternoon

Quote  |  Reply

Every day without fail when 2:00pm-4:00pm rolls around, I find myself exhausted and drained.

Any tips on how to wake up a bit without depending on caffeine?

Thanks so much!

Ever seen the Emerald Nut commercials?

A small snack combined with getting up and taking a walk around the block seems to do the trick for me aka energy + moving = waking up.

I struggle with that same thing. I drag myself the rest of the afternoon. I am glad to know there is someone else out there that can relate. I always eat lunch and I am still active throughout the day, my day just gets harder. energy plus moving doesn't always work. Check with your doctor. I had a friend tell me to after she found out she had a vit. D defficiency. I went to the doc. and found out I had a slow metabolism and thyroid. I am on meds for it, but I am still tired. The reason I am still tired is because I don't get enough sleep because I am nursing my infant which can also lead to vit. defficiencies and fatigue. if you have a hard time sleeping try melatonin. It is a natural supplament you can get from any drug store. rooiboss tea or valarian may work to help you get a good sleep without getting on dangerous drugs which in the long run may hurt you more than help you. so first, cancel out medical problems then get good sleep.

I've had this problem too

sometimes I'll get up and move about (even if I don't want to)

or have some sort of healthy carbohydrate

Then I get my second wind and I'm good to go for the rest of the day

that's totally me too!

I just thought I was weird. When I worked an internship at a bank this summer, I had to sit behind a computer all day so when 2-4 o'clock would roll around, I would get super tired but I couldn't get up or move around. One thing that helped me was to plan ahead and use my lunch break. Instead of sitting down and eating lunch, I would spend my lunch hour on my feet, walking around, doing light excercises in the break room when no one was there. It seemed to work out for me.

This happens to me too, in the afternoon and late morning.  My doctor's theory is that it's a blood sugar crash:  I eat in the morning, my blood sugar spikes, and then it crashes, making me feel lethargic and tired.  Then I eat at lunchtime and the whole thing starts again.

She recommended that I eat fewer carbs at each meal and eat high protein mid-morning and afternoon snacks to keep my blood sugar more stable.

I'm still figuring out how to do this without going over my daily calorie limit...it's pretty tricky.

Please keep us posted if you're able to find a way to perk up in the afternoon!

For me it all begins with breakfast.  I started eating shreadded wheat cereal (the one with frosting for now until I decided I like the regular one) or lower sugar oatmeal (2 packets) and protein, usually non or lowfat milk. i have noticed this helps so much all day for me.  I make sure I eat a lunch that doesn't have too much sugar so I don't crash.  Protein like a light string cheese with healthy carbs like an apple usually help.  Or turkey on wheat with lite miracle whip and mustard. These are pretty much are my "go to's" and a little walking around ( go tell your coworker what you're about to email her.)  i really hope this helps, I hate that sluggish tired feeling at work.

I agree with the poster who named carbs as the culprit.  I used to eat fast food lunches and/or grab something sweet from the vending machine.  When I started bringing food from home (homemade chicken salad, leftover turkey breast and veggies, etc.), the slumps stopped.
