slightly overweight but looking good?

Quote  |  Reply
A couple of weeks ago, I weighed 110-115 pounds. Then I went on vacation and the whole thing bombshelled and, like some other people on this site, I've been having some issues with being-super controlling 24/7 on my eating. Like, rather than tallying everything, I've given myself a loose range... apparently, this doesn't work for me because my weight has shot up to 119. People have been saying that I look healthier and "more proportionate" than before. I've also been, ahem, getting more positive attention from the guys now that I'm not stick thin.

I'm very short, but I feel good and not fat. I am, nowever, very paranoid that I will become fat, so I'm in super-Nazi-boot-camp until I get back down to goal.

This is all so confusing...

How tall are you? Guys like women with curves, not stick figures. You can either lose the weight, (how is 119 overweight for anyone?) or look healthy and better. It's your choice, but I personally would go for the curves, they are sexy (as long as it's not fat rolls, but at 119, I doubt you'd have those)
I'm 5-1 (gasp), but my body type is muscular. I don't have fat rolls cascading off of me (teehee), but doesn't that BMI seem high? I'm afraid to look... Plus, I'm only 17. I exercise, but I'm always so paranoid that I'm overweight.

My stomach is pretty flat with a slight rise sometimes, my limbs are muscular, etc., but come on... the numbers are the numbers!
marconi, no, the numbers aren't the numbers.  I'm only 4'11, and the normal weight range for me is 94-124, so yu would be within that range even at my height.

however, that 30 pound range makes a lot of difference on a short person - not much place to put it.  It still is healthy simply because the extra weight is in the bone density and lean mass - -

if you have as much lean mass as you think, then yes, 119 can be underweight for you, especially as a teenager.

What you should do is get your fat % tested -- to be sure you are not going under the healthy range.  If you do that, it could really mess up your reproductive system.
at 5-1 119 is what I should weigh and it's about where I always feel and look best. . It's not overweight unless you're significantly shorter than that. Stick thin isn't attractive..hence the possitive attention you've been receiving.
yea! you're like me! :) I'm 5'1.5'', 119 lbs and after a year or so of desperately trying to get lower--my goal was 100-105--my weight kept bouncing back to 119. I realised that this is where I should be, and that I look good at this weight: not stick-thin, but curvy and voluptuous!! hee hee i love that word! so I've started to be happy with where I am and concentrate on maintaining and staying healthy with good diet and exercise.
Wow.  That feedback from the men and your family/friends is really interesting.

I wonder about body image and if I actually see myself realistically.  I wonder if you're in the same boat?

Careful too, 119 isn't really "a shot up" kind of difference.  I wonder if there is more going on, like water weight due to high sodium foods, etc.  I wouldn't panic.

If I were you, I'd take a good look and try to be realistic about what weight you can maintain and remain without being compulsive.

Anyway, hang in there.

hey...i'm about exactly the same height/weight/build as you... just wanted to tell you don't worry, and that it's a great place to be :)
Be very very careful with BMI actually, its a horrible at rateing athletic people especially those with a lot of muscle on them.  BMI is good only for sedentary people but everyone seems to use it now becuase its such a easy calculation.

Need any proof just look at bodybuilders/pro wrestlers/track sprinters. While these are all extreme examples I would say 95% of them are classified as overweight, and some especially the bodybuilders would be classified as obese with 4% bodyfat.

The best way to tell is get your bodyfat tested, if your althletic at all BMI is one of the worst ways to measure general health.
You know, my boyfriend always tells me I don't eat enough (yes, the dude who's 8 inches taller than me and can inhale as many calories as he wishes and remain a beanpole). Today, he gave me this huge grin and said that he might be jealous of all the other guys hitting on me. Doesn't that sound ridiculous? I'm always focused on being thin, thin, thin, becuse I think that means I will be well liked, successful... and here I am, doing better at a higher weight.

In the last week, my July 4 "century ride"(100 mile bike ride) training has been going a lot more smoothly. I'm not as tired and sore after those 50-70 mile rides.

119 might be the place to be!
i put in your bmi info using this sites tools and it tells me you are in a healthy range at 22.3
You should be okay at 119.  I would personally stick with that because as others have said, a few lean curves are better than none. :)  Considering at 5'7" I should be at 145-150 as my "ideal".

You're doing fine! :) Don't overly stress yourself out about it, just be smart and healthy! :)

Good luck!
