Slow cooking receipes for beef pot roast? Help!
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone would have good receipes for beef pot roast? I barely eat red meat ever and I have absolutly no idea how to cook a pot roast. I have a slow cooker so I was planning on cooking it in there, but I don't know what spices to put in or anything? Do I have to add beef broth in there too?
Thank you very much for your help!
I'm cooking a chuck roast right now in my crock pot. Easy meal. I don't like it enough to eat it but my husband likes it and it's easy. I put the meat in there, cover it with water, add some onions and that's about it. They sell dry packets of seasoning made for pot roast in the crock pot or some people use onion soup mix. I've found if I use chuck roast it's pretty flavorful on it's own but that's me, good luck.
I cut up red potatoes (skin on), carrots and onion (and celery if I happen to have it) and put it at the bottom of the crock pot. The only seasonings I really add are black pepper, salt, garlic powder and onion powder. You can omit the garlic and onion powder entirely as the beef great on its own. I don't measure b/c I usually eyeball when I cook. I then put about 1/2 cup of water in the pot with a beef bullion cube. You can also put in red wine if you have it. I will cook mine on high for about 6-7 hours and it's fork tender when served :). Good luck.
I'd go with the recipe oddfunk has, with a couple of twists:
Prebrown the roast on all sides in a skillet.
Add a few parsnips with the carrots.
To the 1/2 cup of water add a couple of tablespoons of molasses and some Worchestershire or soy sauce.
When you're finished with the slow cook, take the roast out of the juice and put it in a casserole. Put it in a hot oven for about 10 minutes to dry it off and give the outer surface a little chewiness. Then replace the vegetables around it. Take the liquid and add some starch or flour (make a slurry of about 1 tablespoon in a quarter cup of flour before adding), heat to boiling to make a gravy to serve over everything.
My avorite before I went veg was easy and very tasty.
Just quarter Potatoes, slice up some carrots (or use baby carrots) add brown gravy, and let it cook all day.
:] Yummy.
