How can I slow down when I eat?
Asked by heatherbell85 on Mar 12, 2009 in Emotional & Behavioral Issues

I am 23 and I have been very thin throughout my entire life. I even had a small battle with anorexia.  When I eat now, I eat so fast that I eat a ton before I realize I am full. How do I prevent my body from literally inhaling the food and eat slower so that I have a chance to tell if I'm full?

Answer

Slow down your eating speed by practicing mindful eating.  Approach your entire meal - the food, setting and company - slowly, using all of your senses.  Practice putting down your fork or sandwich in-between bites while you sip a beverage.  Make a point of being seated when you eat and make your environment pleasant.   Note: if you let yourself get really hungry, it’s almost impossible to slow down, and so eat regular meals with enough food to feel complete.  Also notice if the act eating increases your anxiety level, which would not be unusual after eating disorder.  Mindful eating may seem weird at first, but it takes a concerted effort to change a behavior.
