Slow metabolisms and No protein at dinner?

Quote  |  Reply
I've joined a diet/weight group in my area and they recomend not eating protein late in the day and definately not for dinner.  They said something about that protein slows down metabolisms.

I'm going to ask them more about this when I see them next week.  Has anyone else heard this too?

uh, no. If anything most of us need more protein, not less.
Hi heathersquared, thanks for posting.

The portions of protein are 3 per day.  It's the time of day when you eat the protein that is in question.  They say eat the protein during the day and for lunch just not after lunch or at dinner time.
I have never heard that - doesn't mean it's wrong. But it sounds like one of those kooky diet myths to me. Smile

If protein slows down your metabolism, then what is the logic that says you should eat it earlier in the day as opposed to later at night? Wouldn't a slowed metabolism be bad at ANY time during the day? This doesn't make sense.
That's interesting..... I was told if you have to eat late in the day it should be more protein based as the body does not store protein, or convert it to fat as easily as it does with carbohydrates. So if your evening time tends to be more sedentary you are better off going with high protein/low carb so you don't have to worry about your body "storing" what you don't manage to burn off in the eve. I'm sure you could ask ten different people and get ten different answers though, as I'm finding with most things around here. :-)

For what it's worth... Wink

I've seen protein considered to be a metabolism booster...

The idea was that it required more energy to digest than carbs, etc.

I go higher protein, esp. spread out to keep blood sugars level--like my husband does with his low/high blood sugar problems. Also,  it keeps me  more satisfied...for longer periods of time...and I have less trouble with the too-hungry-to-make-GOOD-choices! Avoids& nbsp;my late hungries, too. Laughing

i HAVE heard that insulin becomes less sensitive as the day goes on, and that insulin is most sensitive post exercise.  so most nutritionists recommend eating more of your carbs earlier in the day (esp since that's when most people are more active).

i haven't ever heard about this business w/the protein.  but if you shouldn't eat carbs in the evening and you shouldn't eat protein, what're you left w/?  olive oil?  maybe if i sprinkle on some pepper, it'll suffice as dinner?  don't think so.

I eat my largest serving of protein per day at dinner, and I've lost almost 80 pounds in 5.5 months.

I know if I eat my protein allotment for dinner it prevents me from craving snacks the rest of the evening and I sleep better.Smile
