Slow and Steady Wins the Race

For Sfeld4, popular weight loss programs didn't bring the results she wanted. She made the decision a few years back to finally take control of her weight and has since then lost 96 pounds by counting calories and incorporating daily exercise. Taking it slowly has certainly paid off, since now she is only four pounds away from her goal weight.
She contacted us through our Share Your Story feature, and provided the following answers to our questionnaire.
1. What made you decide to lose weight this time?
I was 45 years old, using a cane because my knees hurt so badly. Everything hurt. My neck, by back, my ego! I kept saying to myself (I guess my personal mantra): how will I know that my knees won't hurt at a lower weight if I don't reach that weight? I just kept saying it over and over.
2. What other "diets" (programs, products, plans, or services) had you tried in the past?
All of them: Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Overeaters Anonymous, Nutrisystem, Biggest Loser, pills from the doctor, pills from over the counter, drops, and Atkins (which I'll never try again). Any program that doesn't allow fruit or salad (in my mind) is not right. After all, I didn't get fat eating fruit & salad!
3. What changes did you make to your usual diet, activity, lifestyle, and attitude?
I made three changes that really made the difference: 1) counting calories, 2) writing down my foods, 3) the "movement" factor (probably the most important change, especially after losing 30 lbs and then hitting a plateau). I kept my calories between 1200 and 1500 a day. I could eat anything I wanted as long as I knew the calories. Writing helped me stay within my calorie allowance and exercise allowed me to lose faster.
4. How did Calorie Count help you to lose weight?
What a wonderful site!! I started with Calorie Count to do just that - find out how many calories were in certain foods I was planning on eating. Then I subscribed to the newsletters and read the helpful tidbits about losing weight that frequently arrived in my Inbox. Calorie Count is the only site I needed to find out the nutrition of my foods.
5. What was most challenging about losing weight?
It is the hardest thing I've ever done! I think the most challenging was staying motivated when the weight wasn't coming off and knowing that I have been sticking with my program. I am losing very slowly, but it is also staying off. Also, I've never been an exercise person, but for the last 4 months I have been rising at 4:30 AM to do 30 minutes of basic/advanced step exercise before my day begins. That has been challenging.
6. How long did it take you to see results?
Well, let's see: in 2002 I was 296. In 2005 I was 255. In 2009 I am 202. I hate to say this, but 8 years I have been on this journey. It has not been all downhill. It is a process of learning, growing and understanding oneself. More importantly loving oneself. I am worth taking the extra time and effort to take care of me. I am worth weighing my foods and preparing them to help me lose weight.
7. When did you realize that you were a success?
I was in a plus-size clothing store recently and realized the smallest size they have is a size 16W and where do I shop when the 16W's are too big? This is going to happen shortly and I've never shopped elsewhere. So I went home and cleaned out my closet. I was going to remove anything that didn't fit and was too big. Now I have 3 shopping bags of work clothes between 18W and 24W that are just too big. I will be donating them.
8. How do you prevent relapse?
I often look at my weight log to see how far I have come. I talk to others who are also losing weight. If I do go off for a meal, I don't beat myself up. I don't wait for a new day, I start with my next meal. I make sure I am prepared with the proper foods in my house so that I don't just grab food.
9. How has your life changed now that you've lost weight?
It is amazing how different I feel. The biggest change is that I actually get up every morning at 4:30 and exercise for 30 minutes. People at work have come up to me and asked me how I've done it. I say the old-fashioned way: counting calories! I now buy clothes that I feel good in.
10. What five tips do you have for other dieters?
- Write down everything you eat.
- Count calories.
- Weigh yourself daily. I know people say not to do this, but If I don't weigh in, I could end up fooling myself.
- Drink water.
- Get moving. I started by doing one thing more than I would normally do on any given day. I started by walking the hallway at home (back/forth) once a day. That was it. Then I walked the hallway (back/forth) twice. Now I wear a pedometer and break 10,000 steps everyday. This still amazes me!

Good job...I have been a member here for awhile now but I just seem that I can not get it in my head to write my intake down til this weedend.I have had 5 surgays on my back and just this July I broke my leg and had to use cructes and found myself then having to use a wheel chair.I was not happy about that.I am 219LBS was a painter for 25 yrs and now not fit for much.I would like to thank all of you your stories are helping me threw..

Congratulations Sfeld4 - you have achieved a tremendous goal that few achieve! I have your same philosophy that the only way to do this is count calories and exercise - move every day and slowing I have been finding way to counter the hunger pangs more effectively and with lower calories and fat. I can forego the cookies for some fruit and cottage cheese. It may not appeal to some so you have to find what you like. I also love plain yogurt with stevia and pineapples and some granola. I have been researching granola recipes so I can make it leaner, healthier and cheaper. The byline says it all...SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE! I have traveled the road you are on many times. I start to take care of myself and then decide I'm not worth it, don't see immediate results and regress to my old destructive habits. I am now back on the road again. I'm writing down my foods and reminding myself that I must be patient, it will take time and I am worth it. Wow, I connected with you when you said you continued doing everything even through the plateau. That is THE MOST annoying thing ever!! I lost 35 lbs, took 9 months, then just got tired. I've gained 10 of it back and must catch myself so I can reach my goals of total lbs lost of 60. I agree slowly is the way to go and we must be able to motiviate ourselves!! GREAT JOB GIRL!!!
Awesome work! How are the knees now? I am in the same situation that you were originally -- can hardly walk these days because my knees are so bad. I keep thinking that if I lost some weight my knees would feel better. Interested to know if they've changed.
Congratulations! I have lost weight the same way. Keep track of what you eat, weigh yourself every day and get moving. Although it is simple it is not easy! I was at a point in life where I obsessed over food. I realized I could still "obsess" over food but use it to my advantage by planning healthy meals, writing it all down and taking responsibility for how I looked and felt. Remember this is a lifetime change, no need to be in a hurry.
Good for you! Slow and Steady is something I have been saying to myself as well. I'm counting WW points, weighing myself daily at home, weekly at the meetings, and contenting myself with a pound a week. So far I have lost eleven pounds and have eleven more to go.

I was in a slump but now see that as you said this is not something that will happen overnight. We did not gain our weight overnight and must accept that it is better to rid ourselves of those extra lbs. slowly. Thanks again for the inspiration.

Congratulations! I have reached my goal and maintained it for almost 18 months now. I also lost my weight slowly. You are taking charge of your life and your health! It is very empowering I think! I too am journaling and am making slow but steady progress. I've just had rotator cuff surgery two weeks ago, so it has slowed down my activity quite a bit, but I am not going to quit. I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired!!!

I have finally acknowledged that calorie counting is the only way to go for me. I always lose weight if I count everything, I just got bored with it before after two weeks.
This time is so different as I go online at least three times a day to calorie count and make sure I log everything including activity. It's so much easier to manage and I love using all the tools and reading all the stories, good and bad. The good one's motivate and the bad one's break your heart but make you more determined not to make the same mistakes.

After many years of many diets and yo yo weightloss - I too started to do it the scientific way - calories in vs calories out. I have been keeping a food diary for nearly two years now, counting calories, exercising regularly. I have plateaued at times, but kept going despite this. And believe me my weight loss has been slow but for the first time in my life my weight has not been like a yo yo.
I have learnt alot about myself, about good nutrition and healthy exercise during this time. Its good to remember to enjoy the journey and not just focus on the destination. I am so proud of myself and I feel much stronger emotionally.
Congratulations on taking control and having the wisdom to stick to it. We live in a world of quick fixes but often the things worth having are the things we have to work hard for.... ![]()

Thank you all for writing/responding. MY knees actually feel better. My knee dr. took some xrays recently & asked me how I feel...I told him I feel better. He said that's the important thing, cause the xray showed more deterioration...I don't feel worse..., so even though the detoriation is there, it does'nt hurt as much cause there is less weight on them. The mobility may be limited, but so is the pain!! So to answer my mantra, how will I know if my knees will feel better if I don't lose the weight...I'VE LOST THE WEIGHT & THEY DO FEEL BETTER!!!! there is hope for all of us!
I was inspired by the fact that your journey was slow and steady over many years. I'm sure you had your ups and downs, but ultimately always returned to the healthy way of living. When I diet and excercise for months without seeing drastic improvement, I'll remember your story.

Your story sounded like me. I've only started 10 weeks ago, and the first 8 weeks I didn't lose a thing. I was eating too many calories, so I did some recalculating, and I have been eating 1500 calories for the past two weeks and have lost six pounds. I am not an exercise person either, but I have been faithfully walking, and I, too, have the bad knee thing going on. They have gotten better, but for some reason they one was really hurting, and tonight at the gym, I could only get through 10 minutes of walking on the treadmill. (I think it's the weather, actually, botherin it so much yesterday and today.) But I, like you, am learning not be beat myself up if I don't do everything perfectly. I made a decision that this is what I have to do. I've been through all the weight loss programs as you have, although add 3 surgeries to my list...2 gastric staplings (years ago) and a gastric stapling intestinal bypass (Roux n Y) in 2000...every time gained it all back eventually. I just want to say thanks, your story is encouraging to me, and it lets me know I'm on the right track, to be nice to myself, and be patient. Thanks! Good for you!
Good for you! The best thing about losing weight is physically feeling good again! With a regular exercise program I started having less and less back pain. Like you, I started slowly. I could only walk a few hundred yards at first. Now I can walk for miles, and ride a bike! I started losing weight, too. I started caring about how I looked for the first time in years. So now I'm counting calories, too. You are an inspiration!
