Small little complaint
OK, first I must say that I have been a member here for about a month and I absolutely love this site. I use it daily for the tools, and also love being able to type in question, check my e-mail an hour later, and have several helpful suggestions from knowledgeable people. That being said, there is one thing about this site that really bugs me: is there any way for you guys to control the ads on this sight??? It is really frustrating to be trying to change everything and live a healthy lifestyle, but daily see links on this very site for miracle fad hoaxes. "Don't you want to lose 40 pounds by the end of next month?" "Click here to find out how to lose 25 pounds in just one month!" etc. etc.. That completely goes against the purpose of this site and it would be nice if those advertisers could be kicked out. Once I actually clicked on one of them because it sounded plausable and it was just another stupid ad for acai berries. Why not bring in ads from health food companies or fitness industries? Just wanted to vent. Thanks!
This question has been asked a bazillion times. I know what the answer is, but someone will come along and 'splain it better than I can. It's a pretty common gripe.
Calorie count does not have control over what ads go up on this site. Neither does About.com. All of this has been explained over and over again, but inevitably, the question comes up every so often. The ads are bundled and bring in revenue to keep the site free. Unfortunately, as with most free websites, it is all bundled by a third party and CC has very little control over it. You actually have more power than the website does because you can install an add blocker on your PC.
If there is a specific ad you object to - do a screen print if possible. Use the contact link at the bottom of every page to report it. State the times you see the ad and as much information as you can gather about it. The staff will do their best to block it. In my experience, they get blocked and then pop up again after a while.
Understand that this will take valuable time and resources away from all the improvements that are constantly being designed, all of it free of charge to you.
Personally, I hardly notice them because I've learned to ignore them. It's just something we all have to deal with whenever we use a free website.
If you get an ad blocker you will never see them again.
Just remember that this site is free because of these ads.
Thanks everyone! I realize that because it is a free site there has to be ads, but I wasn't sure if the site moderators had any control over them. I downloaded an adblock ad-on for my firefox browser and now they are out of sight, out of mind. After reading your posts I searched the forum for "ads" and realized how often people have complained about it... oops! I guess I should have done that first before starting a new thread.
My apologies! ![]()
Best way to get rid of these ads in the long run is for users not to click on them. If the advertisers aren't making any revenue on the ads, they will not spend money to advertise to us. Advertisers, and the business development / ad sales folks who deal with them, measure the net worth of the advertising by the number of clicks on an ad.
Out of curiousity, and for a bit of fun, if we have to have ads to run the site for free, which advertisers, or categories of ads would folks prefer to see?
Jessrene, I don't think you should apologize. Your criticism is valid and it's a good thing to keep it present for the folks who can make changes to see. I just can't believe that the site doesn't have any control over this.
Edit: missing word, punctuation.
Sometimes these ads are triggered by certain words that you type. I never see any of these ads that are aften brought up by members.
I have had the same ad for about a week now. An Indian recipe blog. I quite like to look at that ad, the food looks great.
So just be careful about using trigger words. They are the main reason that you see these ads.
