I've been a vegetarian for years, and I've noticed meat just smells really bad to me now. A couple weeks ago I had some guests at my house that were always cooking meat...it smelled so bad to me, it would actually make me gag. ![]()
I hate to think what would happen if I actually had to eat it..
So, I'm just wondering if the smell bothers anyone else, or does it still make you hungry?
mikelane, i spent a semester in italy and often shopped at the markets there. a few times i had to go to the meat/fish/cheese floor, and it was just as stenchy as you say.
i'm not vegan anymore, but i was vegan for many years. many vegetarian friends said that the smell of meat was repulsive to them, but it never was that way for me. maybe bec i grew up in a family that cooked a lot of meat. and the smell of some meat smells really good to me, like lentil soup w/ham or sausage and peppers or roasted chicken. i actually rarely (like twice a month eat any of that stuff, but i never came to dislike its cooking smell.
Hm. I've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for around 13 years. I think part of whether or not the smell (or meat in general) bothers someone boils down to their views on the subject. I don't eat meat but I also don't have an issue prepping a chicken for roasting and soup. First and foremost I don't appreciate the waste and negative impact on the planet that goes into producing meat on a commercial scale. Overall I think I'm an exception to the rule in the vegetarian community.
Oh, and to answer the question, no I don't think meat smells bad. (I've read a bit about food and beer/wine pairing and sometimes feel I'm missing out but the social implications are too much for me.) Though I have to admit that when my wife grills in the house I don't appreciate how the smells seems to linger afterwords.

Yep, the smell of meat makes me sick. I happened to be eating a bowl of noodles while my mom was cooking a roast one day, and I thought I was going to puke.

Oh I love the smell of meat, I'd never lie to myself and say that it deosn't make me salivate when I'm hungry. But I also know that it's not as healthy for me as a nice green salad...
meat can smell good or bad. when i am hungry it usually smells good. but then again sometimes my scarf sounds like something good to eat on a long walk home from work with an empty stomach. so...yea. haha.
but sometimes it can smell bad. especially if it's raw meat!
but i guess why it smells good to me is because even though i haven't eaten it for a few years it's something i grew up knowing as a pleasant smell that meant that i was going to eat and be full. because of my association with the smell i like it.
at the same time i know it's the smell of cooked animal flesh which makes me feel queasy to think about and kinda guilty for liking it.
I still like the smell of meat and can admit that it looks appealing and I haven't touched it in ten years.
Will I ever eat it again?? Most definitely not.
I wonder how many veg*ns would claim that meat smells disgusting to them, but then eat faux meat that is supposed to taste and smell like meat.
Not saying that any of you do this, but I wouldn't put it past some people to claim that the smell of meat is disgusting, but then chow down on some Chikn things! ![]()
I have been vegan to carno
At most 2x a week now.
Anyone else notice these things:
- freshly killed meat doesnt smell the same as bought
I notice this especially in fish and chicken. I never ate a fresh cow. I really dont know if I could anyway.
- wild meats and free range meats smell sweet
"normal" meats have this strange metallic after smell.
- fake meats smell bready and light
- real meats have this heavy clingy smell to them

IMO, it smells nothing like real meat. Fake meat.....it's not a rotting carcass, and sure doesn't smell like it.
I didn't give up meat because of the taste. I liked the taste of meat, so I switched to some yummy alternatives, hold the murder. The smell of real meat cooking makes my stomach churn, including chicken, but hell yes I love the fake chicken patties.
Raw meat smells nasty to me now. Especially red meat like beef or bison. Just last night my mom cooked up a bunch of hamburger for tacos; it was 80% fat... which only made the smell worse. Needless to say, I was more than happy to be having stir-fry instead.
Fish pretty much smells revolting. Then again, I've always thought this; I only liked the taste in the past - never the horrid smells.
Chicken can either smell good or bad. Raw chicken and cooking chicken makes me want to puke, but if it's cooked a certain way it can actually smell kinda good. Not good enough to eat, but not horrible like fish or other meats.
Well for me, the smell of some barbeque chipotle chicken still smells good.
But that's a bad thing because it's tempting me to eat a poor animal that was helplessly slaughtered. But I don't.
i don't like eating fake meats. the texture, smell and taste is as unappealing to me as real meat. that hardly makes me lose my appetite though, if someone else is eating it. but i'm also perfectly fine eating while watching sugery on tv or talking about parasites.
Where can I see 1/8th or 1/6th of a pie or angel food cake?
This is the best way to picture a portion of pie or cake: Draw a circle to represent the circumference of the cake or pie (9" pie? 10" cake?... Read more
