Newbie here,

I'm looking for some simple smoothie recipes.  LOW sugar or sugar substitute.

Thank you

Smoothies are awesome because you can chuck pretty much anything in there that will blend! For fruit smoothies, you can basically put anything together - some popular pairings are strawberry/banana, peach/mango, peach/mango/orange, raspberry/banana/blueberry, etc. These smoothies are high in sugar, but it's natural, good-for-you sugar.

You can put black coffee with a banana and some ice for a healthy, lowcal version of an iced coffee. Silken tofu is a great addition for protein or making mousses.

If you are aiming for low sugar, use fresh fruits as opposed to canned. If canned fruits are your only option, drain the fluid.

If there's a certain smoothie recipe you are trying to replicate, feel free to message me, I used to work at Planet Smoothie. Most of the recipes are still hammered in my head.. :D
My favourite is 1 cup of berries with 3/4 cup of vanilla yogurt and some ice.  Yummm!  If you live in Canada the PC blue menu fat free vanilla yogurt is the best kind (No Frills, Zehrs, Real Canadian Superstore, Loblaws should all carry it).  Occasionally I will use 1/2 cup frozen yogurt instead (no ice then) with 1/4 cup of milk and the 1 cup of berries.  Be sure to really puree your fruit before you add the other ingredients.
My tips are - lots of ice
Freeze the fruit first - frozen mango cheeks (can get in can) rock
I see people makign 'chocolate bar' smoothies - cheery ripe = cherry jelly (diet) in a glass of milk choc (made in blender with no fat diet choc topping and skim milk, maybe a tiny scoop of lf icecream) with coconut essesnce. Turkish delight = with rasp. cordial, mars bar = caramel and choc toppings with malt etc/

I like 1/2 c milk, 1/4 c no fat yogurt (cheesecake flavour rocks) and a chopped up forzen banana, For chocolate, cut out hte milk and use swiss miss diet, a little water or more ice and crush her right up.

When you say low sugar do you mean ddede or even natural. Cos you can buy sugar free syrups and diet jellies./

Hey Red Herring.

Are you from CK?  I think those are close to the ones I put on there.  But the cherry ripe one had real frozen cherries.  And the turkish delight one had some rosewater essence in it too.
1/2 c. frozen blueberries (and/or blackberries and/or strawberries)
1/2 c. frozen greens (or fresh: spinach, kale, turnip, etc.)
1/2 c. plain fat-free yogurt
1/2 c. water
1 T. ground flax seed
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
Splenda (2 packets or 1-2 tablespoons)

Blend on high for a couple/few minutes. Nice and thick and delicious and healthy and engergizing!
I sure am and I saw the thread!! They look awesome. But I went there to post a ink then realised ppl here cant see them cos you have to be a member in that section :(
Thanks for the clarification - i did it from memory.
I am not a smoothie fan, but I like this one well:

1x 6-oz cup of light strawberry yogurt
1 banana (not frozen)
1 capfull of vanilla or almond extract
1/2 cup skim milk
ice

Ice thickens the smoothie.  I blender the other ingredients thoroughly and then add crushed ice a bit at a time until it is the thickness I want.  This is a big hit with my boyfriend too, which is good because it makes more smoothie than I want at once and I like to divide it in two and serve with a pineapple/strawberry garnish.

I hate seeds in my smoothie, I think they should be very.. you know, smooth.  So I don't like to use fruits with crunchy seeds or strong peels like whole strawberries and blueberries.

I like to keep mine pretty simple..   any fruit you want, plus ice, water, and some protein powder.

My favorite :

  • 1 banana
  • roughly 8-10 strawberries (depending on size)
  • 2 tbsp vanilla whey protein powder
  • 2 cups ice
  • 1 cup water
you can also make it without the protein powder, but it sweetens it alittle..  if I'm out of protein powder, I'll add 2 packets of Splenda or Sweet and Low just to sweeten.  Sometimes the strawberries can make the smoothie a bit sour.  I also like to add some lemon or lime juice from time to time.   After you  make a few, you'll find that you'll perfect the smoothie the way you like it.  I have one every day, and I give the rest to my 16 month old daughter on the way to daycare.  This way I know shes getting fruit everyday!  :)  Good luck!
I like a sweet kick to my smoothies, so I add a tablespoon or two of honey.
Thank you for all of the responses and ideas, I will try some of them. I'm not sure what I want, except something basic/simple/quick that is not too bad for me, but I can have for breakfast or as a "sweet" snack.  I am very new all this, but I know I need to make some changes and I want things that my kids and hubby may enjoy too. I am trying to cut sugar out, but finding it to be much harder than I realized. :0(
I am a big fan of Smoothies. I have one almost every morning  because I am always on the move and i try not to eat something not to heavy before i go and workout. I use 1 cup(8 oz) of Dannon Light and Fit Vanilla Yogurt(80 cal), i use either 1/2 of a banana, 5 strawberries, or 1/4 cup of pinapples, depending on how I feel or what I have in the fridge. I always add a little of orange juice to sweeten it, only a little though. Then I throw in a few ice cubes, blend it up, and BAM! I have a delicous and SIMPLE yet healthy treat. Mangos are also good to add. And I am sure your kids will enjoy them because of the fruity taste. You can also add 1/2 scoop of vanilla low fat ice cream for them to tweak it a little. Try it out.

I have a smoothie for breakfast and my evening meal. I slice and freeze bananas and keep a good supply in the freezer along with frozen strawberries, peaches, blueberries and a berry mix. I add about 4 large strawberries and any other fruit you like, equal sweetener to taste, about 1/2 cup skim milk, Dan Activ yogurt flavors that match your fruit selection and blend. It tastes like it's something sinful, but so delicious and filling. Once in a while I add chopped walnuts or unsalted sunflower seeds for texture.  I can't wait to see what others come up with for smoothie recipes. I also found a company that makes sugar-free syrups, Walden Farms. Their products are carb free, sugar free and fat free and taste terrific. I live in a rural area and our local grocery store even handles them. YUM!!!

can you guys make smoothies and store them in the fridge for a couple of days? or it has to be fresh? I mean I would love to have a protein smoothie for my breakfast in the mornings but I don't have the time everyday to make it. any ideas ?

Sorry this is not related to the OP's question but it might help too:)

I use one vanilla lowfat yoplait, 1 banana and either a couple of blueberries or strawberries. Add ice and a small amount of apple juice or lowfat milk. Delicious and very filling also

I tried that once. Made a smoothie in the morning out of ice, yogurt, soy milk, strawberries, 1/2 banana, and a little whey powder. I drank half in the morning and put the other half in the fridge for later and by 4 pm it had seperated like oil and water. I think partly because the ice melted. You may try preserving it in the freezer though.

Btw, the Abs Diet book has well over twenty different smoothie recipes. A good investment as it has other breakfast, lunch, and dinner recipes also. :]

I use my Bullet to make smoothies almost every morning.  I usually put some milk, fresh strawberries, banana, vanilla, and ice.

I have found that the smoothies seperate when stored and not ate fresh.  This might be because I put banana.

Smoothies should be drank right away to get all the benefits of the juice. Storing them is probably not the best idea. Make smaller amount to get fresh juice.

Pumpkin Pie Smoothie:

1/2 cup canned pumpkin, 1/2 to 1 whole frozen banana cut in chunks, 1 T ground flax seeds, 1/2 cup kefir or plain yogurt, 1 T cinnamon, ice cubes for desired thickness.  If it seems too thick, I add a little more kefir or just plain water.

I blend this in my vitamix for 2 minutes until completely smooth and it tastes a lot like pumpkin pie.

I buy bags of frozen fruit (strawberries, mangos, peaches, pineapple and grapes) and just dump some in the blender along with ice and some orange juice. Simple and tastes great
