What snack/food do you turn to, in order to head off a binge?

Today I was heading towards the cliff, I could tell.  Not the "Oh, I ate 200 over my plan" cliff, this was the whole hog, going to eat 5000 in calories coming on.

I was looking at the peant butter jar, the JIF for the kids, thinking, hmm, how about I eat half a cup of that... when I was struck with inspiration.

I pulled out a can of Apple Pie Filling (No sugar added) and my PB2.  If you eat the ENTIRE can of the no sugar apple pie filling, it's still only 245 calories.  I spooned a serving of the PB2 on top and proceeded to stuff myself silly.  On 299 calories.

I am full now, absolutely stuffed, and no brownies are calling my name. Yay!

Does anyone else have a desperation snack?  Or if not, what do you do instead?

Triscuits, which is funny because Im low carb dieting and insulin resistant which can make digestion of carbs make me crave even more.  Still, a few triscuits which are whole wheat and barely processed are very good for stopping hunger.

The other thing is a big plate of mashed cauliflower or cooked fresh mushroom when Im looking for a lot of filler coming in low cal.
Grapes.. -___-

Anything high in protein but especially shrimp cocktail, just because I really like it. The protein makes you feel full a long time. And I try to avoid sweets and simple carbs because I will just crave more.
skim milk.  it might be a childhood thing, but milk has also been comforting (my mother didn't diet me; i didn't switch to skim until i was well into my 20s).
Since I never binge out of actual hunger, I drink an obsence amount of something carbonated.  It gives me that crazy full feeling without all the calories.

Frozen peas or corn, microwaved with a little bit of Promise and seasoning. Peas especially, because I LOOOOOOOVE peas.  This is best for when I'm actually a little hungry, but no one else wants dinner yet.

Tea and gum will sometimes help with the little sweet cravings.

Oh, and crystallized ginger. I ADORE it, but can't eat much more than 2 servings even if I want to, because it's just so strong-tasting. Of course, each serving is 90 cal, but if it keeps me away from the cake... Ginger also helps when my stomach is acting up.

PB&J is more wonderful than any desert to me.
reduced fat pringles. I eat 12 of them for 96 calories....and that curbs the salt craving and the crunchy craving. I have tried rice cakes but I end up eating way to many of those because I feel like they are healthy so I can eat more. I am more conscious with the pringles.
papaya! but only when its in the house- really good for you and curbs the sweet toothsteamed mushrooms with soy sauce and nutritional yeast for those salt/ protein cravingstea! i have 4-5 cups a day, each with sugar and milk- 50 cal a pop- i know it adds up to 250, but thats over the span of an entire day and stops binges of 1000+ cal, so its definitely worth it- but brush your teeth a lot, unless your going for "the london look". Just kidding, half my family is English so no offense meant.and definitely carrots! not baby, but big honking juicy carrots - 2 of these sweet suckers and im done my craving/ need for comfort food
If I'm bingeing out of supressed hunger, I find something high fibre (like oatmeal)

If I'm bingeing out of emotional supression, I reach for company from people I care about and love. I reach for someone to listen, hold my hand and reassure me. I reach for conversation, a smile, a kind word. I reach for human touch. I reach for acceptance. And then food isn't so important anymore...:)

Pizza Hut pixzza and the four greatest words in the english language

"ALL YOU CAN EAT "

10 slices on my dinner hour on top of all the usal healthy stuff I usually eat.

I know its not good for you, but it tastes so good! No tea tonight and an extra 20 mins on the treadmill will teach me not to pig out!

i make a smoothie or eat a banana in little little pieces. or celery with some jif pb.
and if im not actually hungry then i go up to my room where there isnt any room and take my mind off of food. i find that if you arent doing anything then you think about food a lot.

My version of a "binge" is usually having 2-3 beers in an evening (I know that doesn't seem like much of a binge, but depending on the beer that might be 500 calories or so!)  I have found that hot tea satisfies my beer craving pretty well.   I guess I just really want something other than water.

porridge. i can only eat a bowl of it until i am absolutely stuffed. and a big bowl is only about 300 calories. if you make it with proper oats, the whole grain and hot milk fill you up. mmm.
My desperation snack is always a Kudos "candy" bar. I get horribly sweet cravings after meals and they are always for a candy bar. I find that for 120 calories or less, I slowly savor the taste of the Kudos. My favorite is the Snickers and even though I want to gobble it up, I eat just tiny bites. If something like that cannot control what I am craving, I will indulge myself with a couple of bite size Milky Ways or Hershey bars. I gave the bag to a coworker and he has them hidden, so if I need them, I have to ask him for a couple and it helps me control my cravings.

12 pringles is probably not going to do it for me, alysee.  Good for you, if it works for you, but 12 pringles would not even have registered for me.  I had brownies just sitting there on the counter, already cut, plus leftover cake (from a party).  I was going to eat all that, plus a big fat, pb&j with the expensive jelly from Holland with the huge chunks of black cherries in it.

I was looking for a significant sized portion of something that felt indulgent, yet was not calorie dense.  Porridge sounds interesting mango321, I think something new to me would also help.

10 slices of pizza... wow.  That would BE my binge hagkure77.

Normally, for me, emotional issues are not part of it.  Though, if I'm bored, or stuck in the house, then I am more likely to start into stuffing myself sick.

Yeah, I think hagkure77 misunderstood the question.  :)

my life is complete with only four things: quaker mini delights, baby carrots, sliced cucumber, and frozen grapes

I always have a mini snickers, a mini reeses fast break and a mini fun size m&m's for a midnight snack while I am on the internet. I make this snack last 1 hour. I might have 4 Famous Amos chocolate chip cookies which lasts 30 minutes - 1 hour.

I don't think this even comes close to a binge.
Same here on the pringles. The only way I could be satisfied with 12 pringles is if that was all I had and there were no stores for miles. lol I've been known to eat 2000-3000 calories just in candy all at once.

Oh, another one you can try is popsicles. Sugar free or not. I can only eat so many before the cold gets kind of painful on my tongue and I have to stop. Or if I'm really craving ice cream and don't think I can stop at one serving I'll get a pint of fruit sorbet. Most only have about 100 calories per serving so even if I finish the pint it's only about 400 calories instead of the 1000 or so it would be with Haagen Dazs ice cream. Strawberry and lemon sorbets are my favorite.

Sugar free Jell-o with fruit is also a good one. The calories are mostly coming from the fruit, and fruit is good for you, plus it has fiber to fill you up.

I've done dill pickle binges too. Eaten almost the whole jar at once. Probably less than 100 calories total. But the sodium is way high so don't do this often.

Or make yourself some devilled eggs. You can only eat as many as you make, it takes some time and effort to make them, and 2 or 3 eggs will keep you full for a long time. Even if you use real mayo instead of fat free the calories are not too bad because you don't use much. About 70 per egg, plus whatever kind of mayo you use. They are a very satisfying snack.

But yeah to repeat what I said before, I usually keep a bag of frozen pre cooked cocktail shrimp around and if I'm feeling like eating everything in site I'll thaw out about a dozen shrimp and eat them with cocktail sauce, and it's about 100 calories and tons of protein. Even if you could eat 2 or 3 times that you are not eating tons of calories.
