Snacking at night

Quote  |  Reply
Ok...I have a really bad habit of snacking at night, after I have finished dinner.  It feels like I have to eat something, or I am not satisfied (lots of times when I am watching TV)...I think it is a really bad habit, but does anyone out there have any ideas...I have done this forever, and it is driving me crazy..how do I quit snacking at night?

Maybe try keeping a bottle of water or some tea with you while you're watching tv at night, you might find that satisfies your need to have 'something'.
that's one of my main problems also. Tv watching is the ultimate "zone out and eat double your alloted calories for the day" activity. It becomes a habit; watching your favorite show at 8 and snacking the whole way through and on into the next show. What stops me is giving myself another activity. Multitask while you watch. I study during commercials, or paint my nails, etc. Painting my nails really works (nail polish remover does not taste good, and who wants to mess up freshly painted nails?) =)

Multi tasking is a good idea, that way I will get distracted....and good idea with painting my nails....I will try it for sure! Thanks!

My solution to after-dinner snacking? I plan for it. I save 200 calories a day (unless I go over at dinner), for after dinner snacking! Then, I make sure I have a variety of options available.... and I even keep a list of ideas to choose from! And I make sure that I have sweet and salty and crunchy options.

Tonight, I am nibbling on a huge plate of munchies ....2 cups of halved-radishes, 1 cup of cherry tomatoes, and 2 dill pickle halves (cut into bite size pieces) .... that's a lot of munching for just 75 calories!!!

Broccoli pieces with salsa is great, too.

Sometimes I have a cup of raspberries (64 calories) and 2 tbs of light whipped topping (20 calories.) Or blueberries ... 85 a cup.

Mini bags of Smart Popcorn ... 100 calories.

Protein shake ... 100 calories (I add 12 cubes of ice and toss it in the blender)

Yoplait light yogurt ... 100 calories

Jello SF pudding .... 60 calories

Jello SF jello .... 10 calories

SF Popsicles ... 15 calories

Carb Smart Fudgesicles ... 100 calories

Quaker Quakes Rice snacks .... 70 calories (for 10!)

Reduced Fat Cheez Its .... 130 calories for 29!

When you are done with your calories for the day? BRUSH YOUR TEETH AND FLOSS!

Thanks so much...
I also save up calories and I suggest ryvite multigrain rice cakes with light philladelphia... yummmmmm. Or a banana.... very filling or even a dessert. something chocolatey like be good to yourself chocolate sponge pudding, less than 140 calories and oh so good.

Good Luck

I'm the exact same way.  My issue is that I don't eat much at all during the day, then I have a big dinner, and after that around 9pm I'm starving again!  Then after eating a massive snack at night, the cycle repeats itself (it's such a self-perpetuating cycle....I know).  I won't go into all the crap I often end up eating; instead I'll share some of the things I eat/do that I consider healthful and that help me from snacking continuously.  I honestly don't think it's totally necessary to completely cut out nighttime snacks (a lot of people eat them and if you anticipate them and allot calories ahead of time , it doesn't really matter exactly what time you consume your calories), but instead it's best to focus on limiting them and making them healthy.

-Tea (it's warm and cozy), -Lots of liquid -Oatmeal (again, warm and yummy as well as healthy and filling) -light popcorn -light yogurt with fruit -granola bars (naturally portioned controlled because they're individually wrapped)

When I started watching tv in bed instead of my livingroom, that helped my habit.  Also brushing, flossing, and mouthwash just before watching tv.  Really gets rid of that feeling of "gotta have salt" or whatever.  I even chew gum, too.  Whatever makes me stay out of the kitchen.
I also get hungry after supper; sometimes I remember to save calories, but like tonight I have none and my stomach is rumbling!  I logged on here to see if anyone else felt the same, and they do!
