I work at a desk job and always have the munchies, even if I've just eaten lunch! I try and occupy myself with work to pass the time or have a 100 calorie pack but it's like I'm just always hungry. I drink lots of water and go running at lunch (well jog/walking). Does anyone have any suggestions of snacks that are healthy that fill you up?
I take high fiber cereal to work. I like the crunch and it fills me up fast. I also take a serving of cheese for protein which also fills you up pretty good and it is a little salty tasting if you are craving that. Take a mix of blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries with you for something sweet!
I bring lowfat granola bars, string cheese, extra fruit, trail mix, lowfat or fat free yogurt. etc
i have a desk job too (very sedentary) so i feel your pain. i took one of my flipper drawers and have it stocked with raw nuts, rice cakes, peanut butter, veggie sticks (in the fridge), gum, triscuit crackers, low fat cheese (fridge), hummus (fridge), cottage cheese (fridge), hard boiled eggs.
the nuts and peanut butter tend to hold me over longer than anything else. do you eat breakfast? that's key!

I love munching on Orville Redenbacher's 94% FF popcorn, the big bag, that seems to do the trick. I also much on baby carrots, or celery. I'll have a small salad in the afternoon w/Wish-bone salad spritzers, 1 calorie per spray. I also like fruit. I'll usually have that as my morning snack. I also like laughing cow cheese, french onion wedges on ry krisp crackers.
Happy munching!

I'm the same way. It might not be a hunger issue so much as a boredom issue. The only thing that's worked for me is whenever I get the urge to snack, I take a sip of water.
One of these days I'll get over the psychological hump :P

When I am getting hungry at work (out of boredom) I try my best to focus on my work and barrel through. Also, coming here and reading a few posts tends to keep me motivated. Also I only bring enough money to work for my morning coffee and pack my lunch. I have my debit card but that doesn't work in the vending machines. Ha ha ha hard to cheat if you have nothing to eat beside what you packed in the morning.
This is too coincidental. I just posted the following to a friend in a different forum:
Like today at work, I've gone through a baggie of grapes, a baggie of strawberries, a big orange, a 100 cal tub of pringles, and a bologna sandwich.
I have two small apples left in my lunchbag. One is for my ride home the other is just in case! Lol I almost brought a pear but there wasn't any room left in my bag! All this is already logged and leaves me with about 600 calories for dinner unless I exercise. I haven't even had any veggies yet either!
Besides my orange and sandwich, everything I've eaten so far is something I can pop in my mouth and keep going....did you notice? It's the snacker in me. :)
Edit: I too am a desk jockey!

i'm a desk snacker too. today i've had a container of raspberries, a banana, a sliced apple dipped in PB2 powder, 2 bowls of Weight Watchers cereal, a Fiber One bar, some dry Fiber One cereal, a large salad with salsa dressing, a bowl of Boca chili, a serving of green beans and 3-4 matcha chocolate squares. i have 540 calories left, plus my ride home, so about 900 cals for this evening.
three hints : one, obviously, bring healthy snacks. two, keeping busy at work leaves you less time to think about snacking. and, three, while most people say to keep lots of healthy things on hand in case you get the munchies, having less on hand to eat can keep you from mindless snacking due to boredom. i usually eat every single thing i have, so i try to bring one or 2 items less each day if i'm really piling tons of good stuff into my lunch sack in the morning. so long as you don't end up at the snack machine buying chips & cookies, you'll save yourself some calories. i'm with agana - don't bring snack machine money!

Oh yeah, I get to sit at a desk a lot of the day too...I've got string cheese, carrots, apples, some grapes, blackberries (looooove blackberries), snow peas (in the pod), rice cakes, and veggie sticks with peanut butter. Since it's all pretty good for me, I don't have to feel bad about it when I'm hungry and need a snack.
jkpetite is right too...breakfast is key! If I skip that I'm starving all day.

I work as an assistant (basically a desk job) but the worst thing is that every morning there are fresh baked cookies for all the people who come in during the day. I walk in the front door and you can smell them!!!! When I first started working there I would literally sneak the cookies...eating sometimes 8-10 a day ( I COULDNT HELP IT!!!) but now I know how many calories they have in them....so i figure I can either have that or ALOT more of something else. Some days I still eat a cookie but that means I cant have my cheese for lunch :(
I'm with you!
Today: 2 light n fit yogurts, 2 string cheese, an apple, 2 coffees, 1 americano, baby carrots, celery sticks, laughing cow light cheese triangle, a litre of Flavored sparkling water... and i still have an hour to go!
Light & Fit yogurts, boiled eggs, string cheese and veggie stix are my safeguards! Without them I'd be in trouble.
try to keep it high protein & fiber if you can
stupid desk jobs!

low fat or fat free cottage cheese... fills you up and takes the longest to digest so you don't get hungry again... only works if you're snacking for hunger though. if you're just eating cause you're bored you'll have to find another solution.
When I get the urge to snack at work, I almost always take a break from the desk, grab a cup of (unsweetened) tea and either read for a few minutes or chat with whoever else is breaking. When I get peckish at work, it's usually because I'm bored or just plain tired. ;)
how bout, do what i do which is to walk to the bathroom (an excercise in itself) and reapply some lipgloss NO ONE WANTS TO EAT AFTER THEY HAVE ON A FRESH COAT OF LIQUID LIP LUBE!
I drink about 3 cups of coffee with non-fat milk every morning over about 2 hours at my desk. Then I switch to water. I keep roasted pumpkin seeds handy and protein bars.
I find that having a set time for snack time works best for me at work, such as 10:30 am and then again at 3:30, then i look forward to those times and don't snack in between. Grazing all day seems to be what I want to do, but then when is your body really burning anything? I also make sure that my snack will hold me over until the next meal, so that I won't be starving.
Remember that when you work out at lunch your body thinks that it needs more food because it just spent a bunch of energy, maybe if you eat something with some *good* carbs (like an apple) before the work out you won't be so hungry the rest of the day.
I'm just starting and learning what will work for me. right now this works for me. I just hope i can stick with it.

I have a desk job too and eat about every hour in the morning, every 2 or so in the afternoon. I've already had a banana, plan to eat an apple in the next half hour, yogurt at 1030, lunch (turkey sandwich w/all bran crackers) and 1130. string cheese at 1, veggies at 230-3 and baby carrots just in case. :) It's all healthy snacking and I wait to get a tummy grumble before I eat but now it happens at the same time every day :) I also drink tons of water throughout the day so it's probably not thirst :)
currently in my desk I have:
Oatmeal packets (low sugar, high fiber type)
Slim fast shakes
healthy granola bars
and in the refrigerator in the cafeteria I have yogurt and fruit.
It's not hard to snack healthy as long as you plan ahead. The problem some people have is they forget to bring stuff to work, then the only snack they can find comes from the vending machine. If I had to get something from there, it would be peanuts or pretzels I guess.
Oatmeal is great because I have a mug for green tea (i don't drink coffee) that I just use for oatmeal and make essentially the same way as tea. I just use the hot water spicket on the coffee maker and it's a quick snack that fills you up.

Thanks guys, those are some great suggestions! Today I brought carrot sticks, celery, cucumber cut up, an english muffin for breakfast and cheerios. I love the suggestion about putting on lip gloss though! Right on, I'll definatly try that!
Maybe someone already suggested this - but especially after lunch, brush your teeth ;) It helps me b/c I like the fresh clean feeling! If I've snacked in the morning/afternoon and I want more, I try to remember to pop in a piece of gum instead :) Again, the fresh mouth.
