Snacks for LONG road trip

Quote  |  Reply

I am going on a VERY VERY long road trip on Friday...I need suggestions for good snacks on the road. I am planning on keeping my calories the same even when I am on the road. I know the safest way to do this is to plan ahead...

I am thinking apples, rice cakes, bananas, almonds...what else?

tangerines, other nuts, celery and carrot strips, air-popped popcorn, peaches, apricots, strawberries, berries, pears, and if you're not higly concerned about sugar grapes and raisins are a good idea tooSmile

You could preload some celery sticks with peanut butter...

veggie strips and mini salad dressing containers to dip them in.

Make a wrap with your favourite lunchmeat/lettuce/low-carb wrap and slice it into bitesize pieces (stick a toothpick through each one to hold it in shape.)

It would probably work best if you made up a big lunchbox of healthy foods which fit into your calorie budget for the day and just nibbled out of it as you went along...

Cut up your food into tiny pieces, it tricks your brain into thinking you're eating more when you really aren't.  If you feel to need to be crunching on something, pack some baby carrots or some gum along with plenty of water.

Of course every taste bud is different but, I like to snack on-

hummus w/ celery or carrots

tuna w/ wheat thins  or something crisp celery

cherry tomatoes stuffed with feta

as mentioned before apple. the pectin is supposed to keep you full longer than other fruits

My fav is beef jerky. I dont know why, just is!

Cereal (I took frosted mini wheats) without milk

Raisins

Any fruit or veggie that you enjoy raw

Sandwiches cut into 4s (the wrap idea was good too...wish I would have thought of that!)

Are you the one driving?  There are lots more options if your not...and make sure to take lots of water!!

I just drove 17 hrs straight and love the beef jerky and power bars.  Tried to keep protein up.  Also took mountain dew for caffine.  also I got the little lunch size boxes of cereal.

made chili and took in  thermos, for something hearty, but didn't stop long enough to eat it.

i think i would avoid the beef jerky and soda. lol. lots of water. protein bars would be good. fruit and veggies. make sure if you bring a dip for them, make it low fat. some salad dressings arent so friendly. lol

and i second the carrots and hummus idea.

out of curiosity, where are you going? and how long is it? lol

denne11:  just curious about why you'd avoid the beef jerky.  I have to make the same 17 hr trip, in 3 weeks, (going home).  thanks.

one problem I did have was having to stop for restrooms more often than normal.
I am going from Montana where I live now to Louisiana, where my family lives. I think it's about 27 hours. We are doing one leg from where my fiance lives, Idaho to Kansas City....ahhh I hate road trips!
