Snacks that require preparation

Quote  |  Reply

I'm a first year college student. I find that I do a lot of unnecessary snacking when I'm studying in my room. I'm a very healthy eater - lots of fruits and vegetables - but I'm eating out of boredom or anxiety. No snack is a good snack when I don't actually need it!

I've found a good way to prevent myself from just grabbing food is if I have to prepare it - even thinking about walking down the hallway to the microwave is enough to deter me, and to make me think about if I'm really hungry.

What are your suggestions for snacks that take a little preparation? So far soup and popcorn are on my list. I have a mini-fridge.

Instant oatmeal (or regular oatmeal, which you can still make in the microwave).

Eggs or eggwhites (they're better cooked on a stove, but can be scrambled in the microwave if necessary) with optional cheese.

Carrot sticks or celery with hummus.  Buy whole carrots and celery hearts.  You'll have to peel (the carrots) and cut them up into sticks yourself.

Mix about 60 grams of greek yogurt, or regular works also, with 2 table spoons of unsweetened cocoa, packet of stevia and a splash of Almond Breeze chocolate "milk". Then add a bunch of sliced frozen strawberries. Mash and mix until it's all combined in to chocolaty goodness mess. :)

Yoghurt+fruits+carob power+pb (opt)+sweetener (or sugar/honey), put in freezer for 1-2 hours= the Best and Healthiest ice cream and snack!

Here are a few slow-food snacks that are healthy and low calorie:

-Cut up and core your apples or peaches.  Then serve them to yourself on a plate.

-Blend chopped up fresh fruit and a tablespoon of chopped walnuts with 1/2 cup unsweetened yogurt.  Eat it with a demitasse spoon. [You can pretend this is decadent, even though we all know it isn't.]

-Get a can of two-layer tiny sardines and a dozen saltines.  Carefully lift the fish out of the can with a fork and cover each cracker.  Try not to break the fish.

-Pop up 1/4 cup of small kernel popcorn in minimal oil.

When I was in college, the other people in my house used to buy chocolate chips for me to make large batches of cookies (we had all the other ingredients).  I was good at this.  It's time consuming, but unfortunately with all the dough and warm cookies around it's a diet disaster.
