Sneakily Working Out during Work

Quote  |  Reply

Ok, so I was wondering if anyone could help me.  I have a monotonous job at a register that I stand behind for hours on end.  It's not so bad when the place is busy, but when the store is dead, or nobody is buying, it's pretty dull.

I like to pretend i am looking for something under the counter and do squats, or stand on my toes to work my calves.  Does anyone have any other suggesgions? I kind of have to be standing, I cant use any weights, I cant work up a sweat, and to the untrained eye it should look like I am fidgeting boredly.

I would love to be able to add a few more moves.

Could you pace up and down the aisle when you're not busy?  Or, maybe run to put things back where they belong when you have down time (like literally run)?

When I was in high school, I worked for 1 1/2 years as a grocery sacker.  I was glad I could move around instead of stand in one place, such as a cashier.

And in the days of having to do price checks, I would run, usually because the customer and those in line were waiting.

Now I'm a teacher, so I can get all the exercise I want (I never sit down when teaching, for instance.)  Also, when I am xeroxing handouts, I jog in place.

How about doing jumping jacks, but without the arms?...

Lots of good ideas. Isometrics are good. Simply tighten different muscles and hold. Nobody should even notice you doing these!

Leg lifts, lunges, plies, plies with one heel raised, knee raises...

Plus, I wouldn't feel embarrased about using "weights". Lift something over your head, twist, tricep extensions... if NO one is around, at least you are moving! THEN give AWESOME customer service to who ever shows up!! SMILE and say something nice!

They sell like discrete ankle and wrist weights at places like walmart/target.  They strap on with velcro and are pretty comfortable, you could try wearing those to work and it would help make those moves more effective.

imaginary jump rope?

I've definitely done the standing on toes and going up and down to work on calves

lol you poor thing! i used to work at a large cooperate convenient/drug store, and i was the courtesy clerk, but i'd always escape and skip up and down the ailse, sometimes i would flap my arms to thier gay music, it had to have been one of the most fun experiences ever, i miss it so much. not the boring job, but all the space.

if that is not an option, i am just going to reccomend butt squeezes lol

I agree, butt squeezes are great to keep that derriere in shape . . . I do them when I can.  (I call 'em "butt crunches."  Hee hee.)

You could try squats with really slow, controlled movement.  Holding positions that force your muscles to engage can be good, too.  Even if you are just fidgeting, you're still moving, so don't completely discredit that, either.  It might not be much, but every little bit counts.

I sit in an office all day.  Almost 10 hours of just . . . sitting.  Thankfully, though, I work on the fourth floor of a hospital, so I take the elevator down to the basement and hike all the way up the stairs.  Then repeat.  If you're on a lunch break, or just break in general, do a lap around the building, hike some stairs or move some stuff around.

It may not burn a TON of calories, but everything helps.  Good luck!  :o)
