Sodium and general nutrition

Quote  |  Reply

Hello, I am interested in losing about 10 more pounds, but mostly I want to get back into my former super-healthy eating habits.  I was wondering if anyone had any good info or links to info on sodium.  I don't want to consume more sodium than I need to, but I also love the taste of broth and soup and it tends to be loaded with the stuff.  Does anyone have any low-sodium tricks that taste as good as the original?

Stats: 5'9" 163 lbs, -7 lbs from starting up with Calorie-Count.  Today I discovered that I was safely out of the "overweight" category and that just made my day.  Cheers for progress.

So, yeah, are there any healthy eaters out there who want to send over advice?  It would be much appreciated.

the only advice i could give would be to make your own food.  make your soup, and use less processed foods (as they tend to be crazy high in sodium).  whole foods tend to be way lower in sodium :)

First congrats on making it out of the "overweight" zone! I just did the same thing myself.

I don't have any really good advice on sodium, only to monitor the nutrition labels.  If you're all about the soups and broth, I agree make your own.  If you save the juices from cooking chicken or the center bone of a ham (maybe with some bits of meat still attached) you have the tools to make a good broth.  That's what my mom does anyway.

Yeah, I'll give it a try.  I mostly cook vegan at home, so I'll start saving mushroom stems and veggie nubs to make my own broth and stock.  Grats on your recent achievement and thanks to all for the suggestions.

I don't know how the meat bone would work into your veganism.  I think all you need for the broth is the bone with the marrow.  That is if you don't mind the stock tasting of meat.  My mom makes really good lentil soup for new year's using a ham bone.  We're german so a good bit of vinegar goes in too.  She puts celery, lentils, potatoes, carrots and sometimes tomato in it.  Delicious!

Mushrooms are good for broth/stock.  I have made sauerkraut and mushroom soup for my family's Christmas eve meal.  Just steamed mushrooms, sauerkraut and a lot of water.  Another german custom.
