something other than peanut butter?
I really like peanut butter. Like, I really like it. But I'm experiencing (gulp) peanut butter burnout...as well as wanting to branch out a little bit anyway. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives? Something I can spread on bread as a snack?
I'm vegan, too, which cuts down significantly on my choices.
HUMMUS!!!
seriously, they have like a huge variety of flavors and its amaaazing.
also, soynut butter has a slightly different taste than peanut butter... i like it better.
not much but hope it helps!! =)
Oh man you are speaking my language; I LOVE hummus! I never thought about using it the way I do peanut butter, though - mostly I use it to dip veggies and pita chips in.
I'll give the soynut butter a try too, maybe - it depends on my grocery budget this week, haha.
How about apple butter? It's pretty low in calories and you can't go wrong with apple.
almond butter? nutella?
My favorite sweet spread on bread is a mixture of almond butter and apple butter. For a savory snack, I like either hummus or spicy black bean dip.
Hummus? Sunbutter (like peanut butter but made from sunflower seeds...) other nut-butters... sunbutter and applebutter together is DELICIOUS!
I love tapenades! There are so many varieties such as artichoke, sun-dried tomato, olive, eggplant, etc! They are super delicious & super healthy for you (if you select the varieties made with olive oil & no sugar) - I use these tapenades on anything and everything from chicken or white fish to cabbage & in stir fries! Yummy! :)
Do you use 100% natural PB? If not, make the switch.
what about tofutti stuff? Like tofutii cream cheese?
Or just mashed up banana. Mmm
I love hummus sandwiches; you have to try them. Bread, lettuce, tomato, onion, and cucumber for a simple one. Use a lot of hummus or just a little depending on your taste. I had a PACKED one for lunch for 250 calories! (Most of that came from the bread XD)
I've never even HEARD of apple butter, but I adore apples (just finished eating one actually, haha) so I'll have to look for it next time I'm at the co-op. Same goes for sunbutter, even the name sounds cheerful and delicious.
I guess I'm just looking for something that tastes good, I can use it in the same way as peanut butter, and doesn't have a ton of calories. I'll definitely have to try the black bean dip, apple butter, hummus...yummm thank goodness I get paid tomorrow so I can go grocery shopping!
(It's ridiculous how much I like grocery shopping; I look forward to it every week and wish I could go more often! Especially when I'm excited about new foods to look for...oh dear!) ![]()
Try making your own spreads with soft tofu (protein). Add lemon juice, strawberries, or raspberries and a sweetener (maple sugar) for a sweet. Try whipping it with celery, scallions and tahini with a little soy sauce for a savory.
Better yet roasted vegetables can be mushed into a spread that id wonderful, especially eggplant and/or sweet red peppers.
