Something that's making me mad

Quote  |  Reply
I am 17, close to 5'7" and used to be 160 or a little over. I lost weight healthily by counting my calories and exercising regularly and am now down to about 135.  My mom keeps telling me how thin i am now, and she asks sometimes if i'm eating enough, but i of course know that i am because i want to be a healthy person. it makes me mad because i still don't view myself as thin, but i'm getting this pressure from my mom that i shouldn't lose ANY more weight. i know it's a perfectly healthy weight, but i don't feel thin at all still. when i'm at school i see that even though i'm not overweight anymore, everyone else is still smaller than me.  i wore a juniors jean size 11 or 13 but when those started to get tight, i knew i needed to lose weight. i haven't really needed to buy any new jeans in a different size since i lost weight, but i'm still fitting in 11s now and it might be a miracle if i could wear a 9. i tell my mom "well if i'm so thin, why do i have to wear one of the largest sizes?" and she's like "it's because you're tall".  its not like i'm THAT tall, and plenty of people wear smaller sizes. i feel not normal.

If you really want to reassure her, perhaps you could get a physical from your doctor's office and he/she could tell your mom you are fine.
Technically, you are tall for an American girl. Americans average about 5'4", I believe, and 9 for someone your height is perfectly fine.
I believe what's going on is your self image hasn't adjusted with your body.
Take a moment to realize that you ARE healthy (and if you continue to eat healthy, you will remain healthy), and that as long as you know this, and are watchful of yourself, and restricting your calories/exercising waay too much, you won't be too thin.

Your body is fine. Now it's time to change your mind's image of it.

I just did a quick look and your weight at this height and age is fine.

I also agree with nasuoni sometimes it take a bit for our mind to check up with the new weight. Once I got down to my idea weight I said for quite a while I wanted to lose 10 more pounds. But after being at this weight a while I am able to more clearly see I am thin(ish) and I can I like the way my body looks.

i've currently been to a doctor because my last couple periods were late and now my last one was oct. 1st so i have no idea what's going on. when i was weighed there it was with shoes and clothes on and was 144, and the doctor is like "well i dont think you should lose any more weight" but i knew i actually weighed less. i've been having bloating and constipation (and headache almost once a day) and no one seems to know what's wrong but i'm going back to a regular doctor on dec. 13th.  i've already had a blood test and a pelvic ultrasound and the results of those were fine.

is it very common to have late/missed periods with weight loss? (25lbs since july)

(to share some more of my problems, i also have had very dry eyes for about 4 years and need to use refresh drops every day, multiple times-usually in the evening/night (and i wear contacts). i have had a really dry throat (not really the mouth) for almost 3 years and always have to have water with me to sip on because it gets so uncomfortably dry. i drink over 100oz of water a day. i can't be a hypochondriac either because something is obviously wrong, its just that someone needs to find it!!) --thats what i am REALLY mad about
I don't think you're seeing the same girl everyone else sees when you look at your reflection in the mirror. After someones lost a significant amount of weight, they tend to be unable to see their new body. Give yourself some time and just eat healthy. One day you're going to look at old photos of yourself, or in the mirror and say ..." Wow. I had no idea how tiny I actually was...  I can't believe I didn't see it... " and ask yourself " Why didn't I see it?! " This betrayal of your sight of yourself is working against you right now. You're actually quite tiny but you just aren't seeing it yet. Try to be aware of it though. That way you can catch it before it gets out of hand. You don't want to wake up one morning and see yourself as anorexic. Suddenly seeing yourself correctly yet it going to that extent before you actually see. That being the first sign of the extent of how little you are in all actuality. I'm not trying to scare you or anything. I'd just like you to be aware that you aren't aware of how you look through others eyes right now.

It is common for people who are underweight to lose their periods. It can cause serious health problems. The extended absence of period can cause you to be unable to conceive. If you're exercises too much/and or have too little fat it can cause your periods to stop. If your doctor advised you against losing anymore weight you should listen. Regardless if you're overweight, underweight, or within a healthy range for your stature. Everyones body is different and you may not be getting enough nourishment that your body needs to function properly. You're still in development stages right now. More fat may be needed for growth spurts as you're continuing to grow. My suggestion is to listen to your mother especially since the doctor gave you the exact same feedback.

You may think it sounds silly, but you should listen. Going against your doctors orders is just asking for trouble.
mts, like the others I think your weight is in the correct range. If you want to do something to feel better about your body - excerise is what your looking for not another diet.

It's not because of your height, I'm almost 5'7" and I wear size 7/9 in pants.  Also, your weight seems normal for that height.

However, as you're 17, it could be because of the changes your body makes as you mature.  Juniors' sizes are for people with small butts and NO hips.  I don't know your body type (apple, pear, ruler), but if you are developing a "womanly" figure, juniors' sizes wouldn't fit you well anymore.

Congrats on your weight loss success!

I was looking at a magazine the other day and there was  picture of Sandra Bullock. The caption was saying that she was way too thin and was skin and bones...at 125-130 pounds. She's a tall woman. I'm 5'3" and if I weigh 125 i look a little pudgy. My sister is thinner than me but is about 5 inches taller and weighs 10-15 pounds more. Height can have quite a bit to do with it. Just keep eating healthy, get all your fruits, vegetables, calcium, and iron requirements. You sound perfectly healthy for your height, age, and gender.
yeah i'm feeling like the one thing i want to do now is lose fat and have more lean/muscle mass, not lose more weight.

i think the widest part of my hip area is about 37"

mts-

I am not a doc or anything but does the thirst really persist?  I am asking because of diabetes.  Also I have an uncle who has what is called sjogrens syndrome and it affects his eyes and mouth.  basically all mouth and eye secretions slow down and he really has to watch it (go to the dentist once a month ect).  also some meds will mess with your cycles and give you dry mouth.  I am glad you are seeing your doc but if these problems persist go back!!

i've had a blood test for sjogrens (an autoimmune disorder) and that's not it. and i guess they would have known if i had diabetes from that? i dont know, neither of the doctors i went to mentioned that. i even took a medication that was for sjogrens that the ENT doctor prescribed and it made me produce too much saliva and i had other bad side effects, so it obviously isn't the problem (plus since the blood test showed i didnt have it anyways). i'm just overall really screwed up and dont feel good most of the time, and that's not right since i'm only 17.
Well I feel a little better about myself because this is the first time I actually tried on some jeans at a store after losing weight, so I was at Aeropostale today (I've never had jeans from there so I didn't know how the sizes run) and I fit into a size 5/6. Amazing, but it seems like the sizes run big?

UUGGHH!!!

Thank God I'm not the only one!!

I'm a bit older and a Mom of 2 and I get harangued for losing too much and I'm STILL fat!! I only hope and pray I could ever get down to the 130's (115 would be a dream come true!!). I mean my Mom, Sis and I have been very, very heavy our whole lives and Pepsi was (and is in my Mom's house) a dire necessity at all times growing up.

I was always the thinner one but never knew what it was like to be any where near under 200 pounds much less see any clav' or anything . Then I finally get down to 160 (blech, I know, I'm still too fat at 5/7, as well) and now I'm "Too thin"? I only wish! It seemed to me that everyone's Mother  I read about on-line is alwyas trying to get their Daughter's thinner! Not mine!

She is like 300+ pounds at 5'8, I mean, should I even listen when she tells me I look too thin or is happy when I start to get fat again? Plus she has glaucoma so maybe she just can't see that good. I can't really bring this up with my Mom, I would never dream of asking her why she doesn't do something about all her weight. I know I can't help much and I'm old but I am all too excited there are other ppl like me in the same sitch, basically..

Anyway, feel ya, girl and send the positiveness ur way!

When I was your age I weighed 117..I WAS just naturally skinny. I am 34 now and this morning I weighed 157..I want to be 145-150 I am wearing a size 9/10.  My Aero Jeans are a 9.. and a tiny bit snug..I am also 5'7..I am between a small-medium frame..So if you are wearing an Aero size 5/6 thats great I thought there sizes ran small not big, when I was wearing a 13 in other jeans their jeans in the same size were too small....I saw that the least I could weigh before I was considered uderwight was 120...Have not been that small since before I had my 1st child when I was 19..I think I would look icky...I agree with everyone else, you seem to be at a healthy weight...Dont be so hard on yourself..I also hope you find out whats wrong with you....Thats got to be nerve wracking...
