Where are the 40 somethings?
Hi Gang! I swear I am beginning to think that at 47, I am the oldest person using this site! Are there any other mid lifers out there?

I'm 41, and battling the metabolism slow-down. I have decided this year that I will not go down without a fight. :-)
My mother and older sister think I'm being too vain, that I should just gracefully accept the "inevitable" mid-life spread. I don't agree. Yes, I admit i have a vanity streak, but a big part of it for me is that I know I have a very good chance of living to 100... and I do not want to spend the latter half of my life in pain and with health problems that force me to be inactive. With the kids out of the house in a few short years, I want the energy to travel the world, to remain active with my DH, and to some day keep up with the grandchildren!

I'll be 42 in June. :D
mid-life is relative -- <grin>
I am 59, and possibly the oldest "active" member of the board.

I'm 47 too - just like you. This is a tough time to lose weight, but I'm betting we can do it.
I have one on you guys- I started the 50+ site. Yes it does get a bit tougher as we age but have to say that at almost 52 I have never been in better shape. Guess it's the better effort. Also at my age their is not all the posturing at the gym but JUST DOING IT! Old people rule!!
I'm in the 40-somethings group! I'm 42...and a half... lol (and I know how you feel jenmcc!) My immediate family (hubby, kids) are really supportive, but my sisters think I'm going through a mid-life crisis because I'm trying to lose weight "at my age". wow. I didn't even know I was old enough to be having a mid-life crisis yet. ;c)
42, yeah kelly my immediate family are supportive also. Saw my mother-in-law for the first time in 2 months and she said, " I look sickly" Either to fat one day or to thin the next. Oh well I guess I will continue to try and be healthy.
Hi
I'm 46, glad to see some other 40's and 50's out there. Anyone needing inspiration should have a look at the Bar method workouts - led by Burr Leonard, who says she's in her 50's - and she's gorgeous.
Unfortunately I haven't been actually doing the tapes often enough lately, just getting inspired, and untoned.
I'm 37 ... on Monday ... but I just want to say you all are NOT old -- don't refer to yourself that way! :P And Jen Mc, GREAT ATTITUDE! That's me! I'm living to 100 and I'm going to have a HEALTHY older age! Metabolism slow down is NOT going to happen to me! I'm NOT going to lose muscle ... NONE of it! I don't care what science says -- it's NOT happening. I think the key is to not even accept it -- DO ... NOT ... "ACCEPT" it! Healthy food, exercise, and a good attitude is going to keep everybody young! Yeah! Me, I'm 37, but I FEEL 18!
44. :-)
54....and losing, although not as fast as some of the youngsters
Good to hear from y'all! I probably was just reading the wrong posts, but it seemed like everyone was in their 20's on the posts I saw. I just don't lose weight like a 25 year old! Every pound is a struggle for me at 47. I love the calorie counting method, though. Who know the old school way was going to be what worked! I am trying to vary my workouts. I switch around from walking, workout tapes and am going to be biking soon. I bought a bike last weekendk, but don't have it yet. I am not a very motivated exerciser, so I am hoping that switching it up will help. Good luck to us all.

will be 42 in August!! somehow, somewhere all these pounds stuck onto me !! i want to lose about 45 lb by end of the year...it really doesn't come off too easily!! I'm counting calories, drinking tons of water, and moving around more to achieve this!!
I am 46 and love this site.
I am at a place where I want to be healed of my food disorder, binging, get to my right size of 14. That will mean I will still have lots of curves and can still eat food! I want to learn to love myself as I am right now.
I am a big fan of the philosophy of over coming over eating. I think everyone should check out the web site and see what they have to say. I have come to realize diets don't work, look how many I have been on, and here I am again! I think we are brain washed in this society about how women are suppose to look and as a woman I am sick of it! I find it very offensive. I am tired of being told I am suppose to be a caricature of what I really am. Of course, this ideal is thought up by men. Hollywood women are not helping any! I was not built like a boy, I am curvy and want to feel good in my curves. I think it is ridicolous that I am suppose to hate myself because I have extra fat on me. I mean in this society, we are not allowed to feel good if we are not starving ourselves. If you say you like yourself but are over weight, people don't believe you. I mean how could you like yourself? When did we get soo sick in this country, over body issues?
I think the obesity problem in this country now is a back lash to this way of thinking. I am hoping we will start a dialouge over health not looks because that is what is important. If one's medical stats are perfect, why is that person being told they need to lose weight? There could be no other reason than because of the way the person looks. I am not talking about people that are morbidly obese.
Let's face it a size 14, which is the average American woman, is considered a plus size model. That is just outrageous. I was at a dinner the other night for my daughter and as I looked around the room, the majority of the women looked like me! Now, I am heavy but very active, eat healthy and am a size 18/16. My biggest problem right now is my binging which is a food disorder. I am more concerned about that and getting healed of it than I am about what the scale says.
I think we need to stop indulging the diet industry. It is making gads of money on quick fixes that never work in the long run. All of us with eating issues understand this is not about physical hunger.
Hmmm, I think I am on a rant here. I guess I got excited to find some people my own age. I am thinking some of you must have come up with some of these same conclusions, yes?
OK, I will dial it down. Phew! Thanks for letting me vent! Can you tell I am passionate about this subject? It just irratates me to no end when I hear some "professional" say some generalized or made up idea of why there are weight problems in this country. As usual, we are looking at the symptom not the deep inner patterns that created this. There is a void and that is why obesity is on the rise. Fat is a symptom of something inside of us.
I like this site because it focuses on health. I like that I can see what I am eating, and understand my calories burned etc. I also like that it is a more honest site where we can discuss stuff that is real. Anywho, hope I didn't scare everyone away! Peace out!

Wow, not one response to my diatribe. Does this mean all of you don't feel at all the same way as I do about diets, society and body image? Just wondering?
tully, i am sure there's lots of agreement with you on this! i'm 60 and i've been on cal-count for 15 months, and have seen thousands of posts on the subject, most of which agree we need to focus on total health, not just fat. i am sure you will find many people who are in your situation, and willing to share the journey to health with you! it's impossible to keep up with "everyone" so i think that's why the age groups have formed, as well as many other groups within the cal-count family. friends, journals, emails, messages, all help us stay in touch with others who are trying to reach their goals--and we each find our place here. i hope you don't feel left out--sometimes it just takes time for people to find your message. there are so many now!
